Japanese Cigarette Case, "EO'D"?

Postby Benhog » Mon Sep 28, 2015 7:45 pm

Hello all,

New to the forum but it is so interesting, so much to learn. My Father gave me this cigarette case with a nice Fuji-San scene. From browsing I can see that it has a jungin Mark, I know this indicates something to do with the silver content, but what exactly?

Also see pictures of some Kanji that are a little too calligraphic for me to understand (I'm only beginning to learn Japanese). The main thing I guess is the brand, EO'D outside and in. I don't really know what to search for but I haven't found anything obvious on google so thought I would try here.

Any help appreciated :)

Not a specialist, just thinking your "brand" could be a monogram stamped from the outside, and showing in reverse on the inside, for an individual with an Irish surname such as O'Day or O'Donnell. Also, to me the case is left handed, if the monogram faces outwards, from what one might expect in one designed for purely utilitarian useage. Seems meant for displaying the Fuji scene when offering a smoke to a client in a social entertainment setting as per localized custom? So, the owner could have been a foreign businessman working in country?

I think you may be on to something with the monogram, hadn't though of that! Thanks. I wonder if I can get more information if I ask my father where he got it.

Hi Benhog,

Welcome to the Forum.

I have a book that was published in 1913 that lists well over 4,000 Japanese crests, and although the general format of your crest is line with the shown examples, I find nothing remotely close to your example. I think Trainline may well be on the right track with his thoughts that the crest has been made up for a Western customer.
