need help identifing these marks

I am trying to find out the makers of these 2 pieces. I have looked for the last few days on this website and other places on the internet. I think they are sterling and from London not sure about that though. Does anyone know what these marks mean. Thanks alot Stacey

Hi Stacey,

Definitely not London. The marks are pseudo, perhaps of colonial origin. They have been stuck individually, rather than using a stub, suggesting they do have some age to them. Although the marks are pseudo, this does not mean that they are not silver.

I'll move then to the colonial section of the forum to see if we have any luck there.

Thank you so much! That was very kind of you. These have really been interesting trying to reseach. i do not know if this helps any but the place where I acquired these they had a family member in China at the turn of the century. I know some of there marks are rather confusing. Could that be a possibility?

Indeed it could. I've checked my resources for Chinese Export Silver, but no luck so far.

Let the topic rest here for a day or two, and if there is no response, we'll give it a try in the Far East section of the forum.

This maker's mark has turned up before, but is as yet unidentified. See:

These certainly look like CES marks from the second quarter of the 19th century.

I own the other salt. I always thought it was Chinese. An expert on CES says it isn't and suggests Canada or West Indies. I guess I know Canadian marks as well as anyone, and I don't think they are Canadian. I also sort of doubt anywhere on this side of the water. You notice the marks, with the exception of the maker's mark and and the leopard's head are very well cut. Also the maker's mark doesn't seem to be real letters, which makes me think the maker wasn't anglophone. One question for Markhams are there any scratch engravings on the bottom, check with a good loupe? Mine has no contemporary ones. I should also mention that while well made my salt is kind of clunky.

Thank you for trying to help identify these. On one of the handled bowls on the bottom you can barely see it but i can make out "no" and "myc". the lady i bought these from told me they were a very expensive wedding gift she recieved in the 1950's when she married. She said that a CEO from a tobacco company in Maryland gave them to her. Her father was in the tobacco business and traveled to china in the 1920's. So that led me to wonder if this may have been someone he knew from his time in China. Maybe the CEO was still in China not sure but I know it is a really good possibility these came from China. I did purchase other chinese export from this estate that her Dad did bring back. Thanks again for your time. Sincerely, Stacey
