Hello,
Can anyone please help with this Japan niello box? We have been told it was retailed by Mitsukoshi Sei.

Welcome to the Forum.

Your pics are very small and the marks are nearly illegible, but in the top pic, the first is a jungin silver mark and the second mark that of the maker, Miyamoto.

For more information on Miyamoto and a different mark of theirs, see:

viewtopic.php?f=38&t=24259&start=20&hilit=miyamoto

I think the box is done in Shibayama (inlay of different materials, including precious metals), not niello, but it is very hard to say definitely from the photos provided.

Regards
DR

Thanks for uploading better photos.

Definitely shibayama, and definitely Miyamoto. The maker used a variety of marks in its long history, this mark looks ca 1930s, possibly 1940s.

Cheers
