Hi Miles,
What makes you think Batavia; I do not recognize the Batavia city mark and If Dutch, the palm-tree, I believe has been identified; unknown Amsterdam maker's mark. I will check my book about Batavia & maker’s mark later this week, just to make sure. However Batavia has not always used a city hallmark. Although there were hallmarking regulations for VOC silver beginning in 1667, they were largely ignored until 1730. There were also silver objects made in Batavia by free Indonesian, Chinese, Muslim, and Mestizo (mixed European and Asian parentage) silversmiths, and these artisans were not obligated to hallmark their work, before or after 1730, unless, interestingly, they had converted to Christianity.
