Chinese Export Spoon?

Postby paulh » Tue Oct 07, 2008 11:22 am

I think that this is a Chinese Export piece. Can anyone confirm this or suggest an alternative.

Thanks.

Paul.

Hello Paul.

Believe that WE / WE / WC mark was used by a silversmith in Canton, early 19th century.
Don't know the name of the silversmith.

Hi Paul,
To flesh out Patrick's response, Forbes' "Chinese Export Silver" attributes the mark to an unknown Canton maker c.1820, but gives a side note that they could possibly be from British India.
Seemingly, the maker copied a piece by Eley, Fearn & Chawner right down to the marks and then continued to use of the stamps.
Regards, Tom

Thank you gentlemen. I wish I could get hold of a copy of that Forbes book!

I believe the following are marks by the same silversmith with different psuedo marks.
Have no information on the R.R.D mark.
