Judaica dish marked "M.C. 84 - STERLING"

Post by AllSeasons »

I came across this dish that's marked "M.C. 84 - STERLING". 84 denotes 87.5% purity in Russia (and the former Soviet states), but it also has the word "STERLING", which is throwing me off a bit. Sterling is 92.5% purity, which is higher than 84 silver. Also, I doubt they use the word "STERLING" in Russia; 84 purity is also marked differently in Russia. Could this be an export piece? The only other items I could find online with similar marks are also Jewish items. I'm not Jewish personally, so any Jewish significance in the markings would be lost on me, unfortunately. Any insight into this item would be appreciated.

The images are below. Thank you in advance.
