Egyptian Fiddle Thread?

Post by Silverfiend »

These peculiar little forks came my way recently. I collect Fiddle Thread, and have a large collection of American and European examples. But these forks have stumped me. They are small, five and a half inches in length, and done in the French taste. But they are certainly not French. Nor are they done with a great deal of skill. There are tiny imperfections in the casting, and the filed grooves at the base of the tines are crudely done, as is the chasing of the thread around the edge of the handles. Also, the marks appear on the top of the handle, which seems peculiar. The small mark seems to be an Arabic mark, and the larger one rather looks like a cat, which made me think these are Egyptian. If I had to guess, I'd think late 19th or early 20th century? Any help would be appreciated.Image
