Iraq or Iran , Assistance Required on Unknown marks

Postby dartsil » Sun Feb 20, 2011 9:46 am

These 3 match box holders I have had for several years and once in a while I look them out and see if I can get a match on the hallmarks but as yet I have had no luck.

Difficult to get good images of the marks so I have tried taking images through a loupe which I hope will be sufficent for someone to recognise.

If an age and maker can be determined that would be a bonus, right now Country of origin would be a great start.

Dear dartsil,

These marks are indeed Egyptian as identified by the lotus blossom in the center box. The marks have been polished so well that the details of the hallmarks are somewhat lost.

The left box may be showing a 9 and 0 which would be 90% silver fineness. The detail above the fineness would tell you the assay office but it too is worn smooth. If it is a straight smudge it could be Alexandria.

The mark on the right is the date mark which is a bit more difficult to ID not because of the polishing but because of Arabic letters are not easily ID'd. I will do what I can to find what the date mark represents.

If it is possible to reshoot all three boxes with a close up on the marks, then between the three we might be able to get more accurately all the information the marks provide.

Hope that helps some.
