Unusual spoon but not marked

I was wondering if anyone could give me some direction to research on this unusual spoon. It measures 11.2 cm (4 3/8") and is engraved AB on the bottom of the bowl. No other marks. It has been suggested it might be ca. 1850 or earlier and possibly a design from the South Pacific or India. Any guidance is very appreciated.
