Egyptian Silver Pillbox - Age & Purity request

Postby SilverOneLove » Tue Aug 19, 2008 6:13 am

Hello everyone,
I have recently acquired this beautiful egyptian pillbox, whithout any further information.

Having browsed the site and reading the egyptian section, I came to conclude it has got a purity level of 800/1000.
However, I would greatly appreciate if someone more savvy than me could be so kind and confirm this.
Also, I'd be delighted to receive information about the age of this piece.

The lid features an engraved scarab motive and the sides are decorated with alternating camelia flowers and crossed-ribbons. The inside unfortunately is slightly worn, but the hallmarks still show very well:

Hello.
The three symbols are as follows;
On the left, as you say are the arabic numerals for 800 which means that the metal used on the item is 80% pure silver. Above the 800, there is arabic script which indicates that it was assayed in Alexandria.
The symbol in the middle is a lotus flower and serves the same purpose of the lion passant in england - a guarantee mark. Until 1946 the cat symbol was used. So this dates to after 1946.
The symbol on the right is the date letter. Date letters until 1946 were written using Roman numerals. After 1946, arabic letters were used. This is the arabic 'ba', like a b. Unfortunately, I don't have a chart of date letters so I don't know whether this would be say 1948 or later. The date letters change every May.
I hope that is a useful contribution. It would be nice is anyone could post a chart of the date letters.
Regards
Mehdi

Thank you very much LG,
I really appreciate your efforts in explaining the hallmarks.
I would have never figured out this was manufactured in Alexandria on my own. Thanks again!

Yes, that would be swell! I find it particularly hard, even looking up arabic letters on google, to figure out the dates behind the letters.
