Marks look Egyptian, but not quite?

Postby muraille » Sat Aug 09, 2008 3:28 pm

These marks are not exactly identical to the ones illustrated for Egypt in the world hallmarks, but are they sufficiently identical to be able to say the spoon is Egyptiand? And what would be the purity? Thank you.

Egypt after 1946, the standard mark is the left one, the ^ is eight, O is zero, indicating .800 purity. The squiggle above the numbers is the city name, could be Cairo or Alexandria. Center mark is the national "Lotus" blossom mark, right mark is Arabic date letter.

Thank you so much Tom. I was afraid the lotus wasn't sufficiently "lotus like" versus this site's illustration.

Have to admit that it does look a little wonky, but, who knows how much variation there was over time - and if it was worthwhile for any Egyptian silversmiths to dodge the bureaucracy by creating their own imititation hallmarks.

Hi,

The mark is from Alexandrie.
Tardy has two different lists in his booklets. One in the silver edition and another in the gold-platine book. The ones in the gold-platine one are the correct ones. My neighbors corrected the silver edition for me without ever having seen the other one and they match.

Doos,
Could you compare your corrected version with the Tardy silver marks listed under the United Arab Republic, I've been told that these are correct, but I am not sure.
Thanks, Tom

Hi,

I never noticed the Egypt marks being listed under the AU before. Yes that is the correct list, with Keneh added.

Thanks, great to have that verified.
