Re: British Assay Office Marking Errors

This thread is very interesting. I don't know if mentioning this is a taboo on this forum, but am I right in thinking that mismarked items would be a great deal more collectable than other items due to rarity? There is a similar situation with my Granddad who collects rare stamps. As well as nice an...

Re: RED PATINA ON SILVER ?

Hi Argentum49, Here is a link to your image: http://img208.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=84974_432871820_o_122_418lo.jpg In my opinion, the red patina which you describe here is simply a reflection from what is in the background whilst the photo is being taken. Not brass, or any other metal. Regards,...

Re: Is this real silver?

Hi Argentum49,
Are you sure the 6th Moscow Artel worked for Moscow? I have nothing that says the 6th Artel worked in conjunction with Fabergé. Although my reference does say the 6th Artel were a court supplier, there is no mention of Fabergé.

Re: UNKNOWN RUSSIAN ITEM

Hi, It is possible that this is a serving plate, (possibly to be used in Jewish families) on which slices of bread would be placed? And there would be a dip for the bread in the holder? If I remember correctly I saw something very similar made of wood in my local auction house about 4 months ago tha...

Re: is this real Fabergé

ENAMELED PIECES ARE HARD TO FAKE BY ADDING NEW HALLMARKS BECAUSE STRIKING FAKE HALLMARKS WOULD CRACK ENAMEL. THREFORE, FORGET PLAIN SILVER BY FABERGE. What is the point of taking this view? There are plenty of genuine non enamelled Fabergé items out there... You just have to look for them. Regards...

Just a quick amendment - this should read "in the UK before 1890" not 1910.

Re: Help me identifying these hall marks

Hi Phillip, Your items are from 1929 - I will explain. Here are your marks: http://d.imagehost.org/0236/e.jpg Take note of the shape of the cartouche around the letter 'E' - it has a point on the bottom. Now look at the date mark for 1853: http://b.imagehost.org/0439/045.jpg The cartouche on this ma...

Re: Help me identifying these hall marks

Hi, The sugar bowl and cream jug are English Silver (I am unsure of the spoon!). From left to right the marks on the two English items mean: Makers Mark - Assay Mark - Silver Purity Mark - Date Letter The Assay mark on this piece is for the City of Birmingham. The silver purity mark which depicts a ...

The Origin of your interest.

I have been wondering recently and have a few questions for you all on the forum... They do not exactly relate to pieces of Russian silver - I am just interested in how you became interested so here are my questions: 1) What first sparked your interest in Russian silver? 2) How old were you when you...

Re: is this real Fabergé

Hi, Yes - whoever added the mark would have known that Aarne was a Faberge workmaster, but just gotten the dates wrong. As for your question about when the Faberge mark was added to an item - I do not know... I would assume that they weren't added by the Masters though I may be wrong! It is not some...

Re: is this real Fabergé

I am not sure about the Finnish importers mark, but all the other Finnish marks are good - It is equally possible that the faker added the Finnish impossible mark. Sorry - this should read the Finnish import mark at the end of the sentence. Also - I have just re-read what Postnikov said before: W =...

Re: is this real Fabergé

Hi, As we have recently learned thanks to Qrt.S, Faberge did have a workshop in Odessa although it was only in existence between 1900-1903 so we can rule out anything here. The kokoshnik mark on your item was only used 1899-1908 and was then replaced with a different kokoshnik mark. I agree about th...

Hi, A little background on the maker, Johan Victor Aarne. 1863 - Born in Finland 1880-1890 - Worked in August Holmstrom's workshop (August Holmstrom was a Faberge workmaster at the time - Aarne would not have been able to put his own mark on any items as he was not a master yet.) 1890 - Returned to ...

Another point to add - Faberge items were mostly (if not always?) made in 88 zolotniki silver (higher grade silver) whereas yours is made in 84 zolotniki silver.

Re: is this real Fabergé

Hi,
In my opinion this item is most probably a fake.
Items such as cigarette cases are made of more than one piece. In this case - the two halves of the cigarette case.
All of the individual pieces on an object had to be hallmarked seperately which yours isn't.
Regards,
Piette
