Re: Whiting manufacturing company - New York
There is one other bit of information I have on the Whiting Engravings: Back of a Whiting Hand-Hammered tablespoon 5-3/4 inches long with smooth bowl (these hand-hammered "vine trailing" spoons are quite uncommon): https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.j...

Re: Whiting manufacturing company - New York
I'm convinced that whoever engraved the "S" engraved a "1" beside it... It's as if he knew the factory number was supposed to be "17" and the worker accidentally failed to punch the "1" in front of the "7"... This reminds me of long-time employee at ...

Re: Whiting manufacturing company - New York
I found the "S" crude hallmark on a Whiting Card Case from 1882, Aesthetic-Period type of engravings: https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg I don't know if this is a "date code" either, this is an interesting topic, however: https://www.925...

Re: FG shield or harp hallmark
I'm not quite convinced of Ulm, or Germany, as of yet.... Still looking, but Germany is my first guess, even though the shield doesn't quite match the other Ulm shields I have seen, also the lack of a "zig-zag" assay mark raises more questions.... Possibly Denmark? Maybe the Italian States...

Re: FG shield or harp hallmark
Is this the hallmark for the City Of Ulm? This would be a shield with "Rabbit Ears" on the top, and sometimes the shield is seen without rabbit ears, but it seems as if your hallmark displays a very prominent set of "Rabbit Ears" I would think so? This hallmark was used from the ...

Re: Loth Standard Spoon. Cloaked man finial.
When I say "the top of the spoon was pointed," what I really more precisely mean is that it had a "hoof finial". It was not an actual "deer hoof" finial. I have seen actual German "Deer Hoof" spoons which had a finial which was an actual, natural-looking, real...

Re: Loth Standard Spoon. Cloaked man finial.
I hope this helps, but I remember my spoon had a very similar blue-and-white enamel motif, similar to these Peter Hertz spoon marked 924 but without the "Octopus" hallmark which we are searching for. My spoon had a unique "3-faceted-stem" where the shaft was not flat, but it was ...

Maybe something to do with "The British Empire Exhibition Of 1925" is what I keep reading about?
Are there any letters on the edge of the medal?

Re: Abstinando King Dishes?
I believe the difference in markings has something to do with the "Octagonal Base," I have noticed the same phenomenon with creamers by Hester Bateman with the Octagonal Base. Sometimes you see the creamers side-marked, and sometimes you see the creamers with the hallmarks on the bottom of...

The mark showing in the pic in the above post is the "Stylized O" or perhaps a "Stylized Q" which has unknown significance.

Re: Provincial Tongs
Of course, in the extensive article in the silver magazine "The Finial," hallmarks such as those found on my pair and Cliff Nunn's pair are not listed. Whoever made these tongs, I can assure you that these hallmarks are identical, even the curious extremely close stamping of the [F] on top...

Ok, the maker is "James Erskine" and the member Cliff Nunn has a very similar pair with the mysterious "O" and the two letters....
I knew I had seen a pair of these tongs before! I am trying to upload the pics from Cliff Nunn, but I get blocked due to privacy concerns...

I wonder if the New Member "Elspeth" might take a look at these tongs, I believe they are Scottish Provincial, perhaps by an unknown maker?

Re: 1740 Cup John Main GEO Assay Mark
Wow, that is amazing, I found a few John Main hallmarks in my research, so I suppose all of them had been mis-attributed? Are the two hallmarks extremely similar? Thanks for updating this topic, now I am glad I posted this to the forums, this could be of great service to collectors of Scottish Silver.
