Hi Miles, Although registered in 1917... it appears that his work covers much later dates... I think 192? to 195?.

Best wishes, Mike.

I think it is too neat to be an overpunch... But I cannot think for the life of me of anyone except William Holmes... who was working in the late 18thc as having anything like those initials. Might be worth exploring. Best wishes, Mike.

I still maintain that the curators at the British Museum should be asked to research this piece, whatever the outcome. Best wishes, Mike.

I believe that what you have here could be an important piece of Royal and religious history... depicted in scenes of what appear to be British activity. The figure at the top, on one side, appears to be Charles II. I do not believe the marks are pseudo at all.. I believe the lion is representative ...

The dimensions would concur with it being a card case rather than a cigarette case .... Best wishes, Mike.

The blackjack is almost certainly 18thc and the silver rim... which I suggest is by Joseph Preedy of London is almost certainly a later addition. Have seen a few of these with similar silver mounts...none of which appear to fit well. I believe this is because the wear at the top of the blackjack thr...

Although the "R"s are similar... the boxes they are in are a different shape, hence the misunderstanding of the date.

Christopher Canner was a prolific caster maker of the period but I believe (from memory) that his mark was a large 'C' with an 'a' within it and no dots. Perhaps it is the photograph.... but the marks look somewhat contrived and not as crisp as they should be. Not saying that it is fake but I would ...

I would suggest you hang on to this lovely mug, as 'unclobbered' pieces like this are scarce....and if in good condition are increasing in value at around 15 to 20% per year......much better than any bank investment. Best wishes, Mike

Hi Miles. Can I suggest that the handle and the picture back bowl are probably a later marriage. I have seen the squirrel before on spoons of a later time.......I too love mysteries.........may pay to check the proportions of the bowl to the handle.....the bowl looks slightly too large for the handl...

Don't recognise the mark as a Mappin and Webb retail mark and as it was made in Birmingham..possibly by Yapp and Woodward it may well be a Birmingham retailers mark. However...there are so many anomalies in the silver world that it could be Mappin and Webb!!!! Further research eh?

Sorry if this is bad news for you and please check with a reputable auction house to verify...don't take my word for it.... I think by the quality of the stamps and the lack of duty mark, that your spoon is probably from 1949 rather than earlier.
As I said..do get it checked. Best wishes, Mike.

The ring is likely to be a specially commissioned one and is very likely to be gold if it came from Africa. The mark would therefore be the initials of the maker. The stone appears to me to be a 'Beryl'...but please don't take my word for that as my monitor shows things much darker than they are and...
