Re: Tiny spoon
The marks are for Sheffield 1943-1944 and the maker is Atkin Brothers. I cannot comment acurately on it's use but it looks to be a teaspoon. The firm of Atkin Brothers traces its establishment to Thomas Law in mid 18th century. It was succeeded by Henry Atkin and John Oxley trading as Atkin, Oxley &...

Re: A Joseph Taylor vinaigrette?
Hello, And therein lies my error and the confusion. I used Jacksons (page 354) as my sole reference point and that lists an "IT" mark for both Joseph Taylor (1788 [oval] on a marrow spoon & 1794 [oblong] on a caddy spoon) and for John Thornton (1801 [oblong] on a vinaigrette). Had I re...

Re: A Joseph Taylor vinaigrette?
Thank you for taking time out to reply. That was my thought also but I was confused as to whether or not he made vinaigrettes as they are not attributed to him in Jackson's.

A Joseph Taylor vinaigrette?
A small vinaigrette, 2.7cms x 2.1cms x 1.3cms, Birmingham 1800 by Joseph Taylor? I am assuming that this is Joseph Taylor and not John Thornton as the cartouche is slightly rounded at the corners but I can find no details that Joseph Taylor made vinaigrettes whereas John Thornton did. Can anyone she...

Re: Does anyone recognise this makers mark
I have also been trying to attribute a name (and date) to this mark. There is a spoon in the Ashmolian Museum Silver Collection of similar design and mark (DS with pellet between and crown above) and Daniel Shelmerdine is attributed as the possible maker c.1695. http://www.ashmolean.org/ash/objects/...

Re: Are these by Thomas Law?
Thank you Mike for this additional information. I will work, for now, on the assumption that the items are by Thomas Lambourn and research further to see what details I can find on this particular maker. When, and if, I find anything I will post it on the forum.

Re: Are these by Thomas Law?
Again thank you. I was not aware that Thomas Law also had a TL mark or that this mark exists with and without the serrated edge so this, for me, is good additional information. The mark shown on the link has a pellet between the T and the L which is not on the marks on my items. Perhaps other forum ...

Re: Are these by Thomas Lamborn?
Firstly thank you for your reply, secondly apologies, I got my notes mixed up the post should read Thomas Lamborn. The mark for Thomas Law is completely different to what is on these items. I have changed the subject heading in the post just to add to the confusion.

Are these by Thomas Law?
Hello, Can someone please confirm these are by Thomas Law, I can find no mention that he made knives and forks but the makers mark matches that shown in Jacksons. The knife is 175mm long and the fork 155mm long. The knife is marked for 1792 but the fork has no date letter, as they are they both have...

The marks are Birmingham 1920/21 and the maker is H Matthews so you are correct on all counts.

Re: Does anyone recognise this makers mark
Whether they are 1660, 1695 or another date will remain a matter of speculation and future research but it is an aside compared to the pleasure of having them in the collection. Thank you for sharing your forks on the forum. I am now extremely envious!!

Re: Does anyone recognise this makers mark
Hello, Just to close out this thread I have recently aquired a trefid sweetmeat fork by the same maker as the spoon referred to in this post. The fork is similarly engraved as the spoon although the gilding may be later. Also close inspection of the mark on the spoon indicates a pellet at the bottom...

Re: Silver tankard - can anyone identify the marks please
This looks to be by the Glasgow silversmith J. Reid (of Napiershall Street?). There is a silver tea service in the National Museums Scotland of similar design but decorated with Zodiac signs. I have also seen a christening mug by the same maker of this period decorated with animals (dogs I think) bu...

18th century but what date were these made?
I have a set of 6 Sheffield knives in their original box and I have identified the makers to Jacob and Samuel Roberts who worked in partnership between 1774 and 1787. The blades are marked ABBA, with a cross, and there is what I believe to be a date letter on the handle and a further mark. I cannot ...

Re: Does anyone recognise this makers mark
Hello agphile, thank you for this information, my research has lead me to understand that the makers mark (which I read as being DS crowned) is detailed in Jackson`s, Ian Pickford Edition, The Antique Collectors Club, 1989, page 515, unfortunately I do not have this edition (complete version not the...

Re: wedding or baptism spoon- town mark and maker?
Hello huszas76, I have attached the mark for Kesmark from Tardy that I was referring to, it is the one on the right. I thought the mark between the sword points was not dissimilar to those on the spoon but there is no sign of a 13 being stamped. Trevor http://tinypic.com/r/5fert2/6" onclick=&qu...
