Re: Quiz Time - A Marks Mystery for Readers !

An enquiry from a friend for a photo of the T ? mark on the frame, which is a repeat of the one on the studded chape, prompted my wife to admit that mark had helped her. Now she tells me ! So here it is . Sorry for poor quality https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg Mind you, my admiration for Trevo...

Re: Quiz Time - A Marks Mystery for Readers !

Our illustrious moderator Trevor has very courteous and not to claimed victory on this site, but quickly came to the right answer after only a few moments on Sunday. He and my wife are obviously brighter than the rest of us ! Not remembering that most people have never seen a stock buckle, one clue ...

Quiz Time - A Marks Mystery for Readers !

I recently bought a stock buckle with no assay marks, although it is almost certainly English, from the last quarter of the Eighteen Century. - Stock buckles were used to secure an elaborate cravat at the back of a gentleman's neck. https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pic...

Great !
Now we need to know whose widow she was, and hope he was one of the silver-smithing Bateman family !

Re: ARDESOIF, Stephen (Grimwade p.425)

As Abraham Ardesoif was described as a Silversmith when appearing at the PCC to validate the obviously unwitnessed Will of of Master Gunner Stephen Demar Ardesoif a connection is extremely likely with our Stephen Ardesoif (Grimwade p.425 ). My speculation is that Susannah Bateman Ardesoif, the widow...

Re: S.U - on Bowl, 1780

Can you check with your correspondent that the rather blurred punch at the bottom ( and slightly right of centre) is not a duty mark ? It looks more like a George head than a leopards head, which would shift the date up 40 years to 1820. Not that it would help us much there seems a conspicuous lack ...

Re: SLEAP, John (Grimwade p.398)

However a recently acquired shoe buckle with "u" date letter for 1795/96 and the JE / JS mark gives a problem to the theory that the partnership was dissolved around 1793. Either James had a separate mark for an additional solely operated business at 2, Salisbury Court , with the older par...

Re: COUGHLAN, Laurence (Grimwade p.473)

Further proof that Ann Andrews, the widow of John Andrews is the lady who married Laurence Coughlan is provided by the her will proved at PCC on 10 September 1795. as Ann Coughlan (TNA/ PROB 11/1265) It clearly shows as beneficiaries many of her children and grandchildren who have Andrews as last or...

It certainly look like Grimwade No 3869 (page 274 -as an unregistered mark ) which he attributes to Thomas and William Chawner. Grimwades example had a 1763 date and, significantly was also on a gravy spoon

Re: Who is maker T.W

Thomas Wallis (1) retired in 1785 and all his tools etc were sold. See below By 1810, when his will (proved 1819) was made he'd moved to Waltham Abbey, Essex. Although he may have passed just his old punches to his son, this seems unlikely. If the dateletter "O" is for 1789 Wallis (1) is j...

Re: GINES, George (Grimwade p523)

There was a family connection between George Gines and Thomas Deane (see http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=52145). George Gines' will of 1749 (proved 1751) gives a Thomas Dean as grandson. A Non -conformist record of an adult baptism of a George Gines Stibbs in 1768 gives the pa...
