Re: Help with attribution of oriental box
Hello It is interesting that the same mark has surfaced twice recently. See https://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=217064#p217064 It reads عمل جعفر, (?amal Jafer) or "made by Jafar". Could also be Jafary since the mark is well worn. This must be Persian or northern Indian. There is...

Hello It is interesting that the same mark has surfaced twice recently. It reads عمل جعفر, (?amal Jafer) or "made by Jafar". Could also be Jafary since the mark is well worn. This must be Persian or northern Indian. There is a Persian silversmith named Jafary whose mark appears on the Nati...

Re: Cast Silver Bowl
Hello Martin Thanks for posting the new images. I am stumped although I still think that there is a Himalayan or Central Asian dimension to this bowl. If I come across anything relevant, I will post it. By the same token, if you find out something, please add it to the thread Sorry to draw a blank. ...

Re: Brass and silver metal holder
Hello Jannie
Thanks for the additional photos. I had not appreciated the size or depth of your item
I now think it is a Quran box, likely from North Africa
If you google "Morocco Quran box" you will find similar items including some with the nine numbers in the 3 X 3 square

Hello AllSeasons On the face of the coin which has three lines of text and a number, the third line is قسطنطينيه which is Ḳosṭanṭīnīye (Constantinople) in Ottoman Turkish. I believe that refers to where the coin was minted The number underneath is ١٢٥٥ or 1255 Hijri calendar. 1255 Hijri is 1839 CE. ...

Hello Roxaneo The word is Mahmoud (or Mahmud) which is a man's name. It could be Arabic or Persian. If this were Persian silver work we would normally expect to see a stamp with the number 84 or the Persian equivalent to indicate silver content. The painting is rather roughly executed compared to ty...

Helo Greg What an interesting tray. The painting technqiue is mina kari (meena kari) میناکاری which is a type of fired, painted enamel. Isfahan is a major centre for this art form. The image is likely inspired by the Gulistan by Saadi These two excerpts are from the Encyclopedi Iranica at https://ir...
