Hi,

They are Dutch with pseudo marks. One is to mimic the citymark of Bolsward, another to mimic a dateletter from Groningen.

Hope that helped.

These are marks of Amsterdam, but I have some suspicions. Could you post an image of the whole item?

Hi,

The "van" part in a Dutch name is alas not a token of nobility as is usually the case in the German equivalent "von".

Hi,

I don't think so, his mark was AVH (in a few different varieties). Usually the 800 mark is not Dutch.
The style is also not right for that period.

Hope that helped.

Hi,

There are wolves in the Netherlands, only in the zoos though. It is actually a boar's head. Between 1831 and 1853 it was also used on old domestic works.

Hi,

It's the mark of the Dutch (Schoonhoven) company Hendrik Hooijkaas.
The 90 mark is a quality mark for silverplate.

can you tell by looking at the layers of amethyst Hi, Although this is beyond this forum's topic, you can not differentiate natural from heated amethysts by looking at the enantiomorphism (to use a fancy term to indicate left- or right handedness of quartz) through colour zoning. Below the conversi...

Hi, It is indeed a nasty method. When I did my apprentiship, my boss got a whole batch of antique silver that had been stored in a vault for over 30 years and it was to be auctioned at Christie's. All was black all over. The auctioneer made the choice to have it repolished by us and my boss indeed u...

Hi, The mark indicates that it was offered for assaying in completed state ("voltooide staat"), as often is the case with imported goods. It says nothing about the origin or date of fabrication. The tolerance for these goods are lowered to 20/000 as the fineness can not be determined to a ...

Hi, If I remember correct they are oxidations. Cupric gives black spots and cuprous gives red spots (or the other way round). There are a few ways to get rid of them, the first is obviously repolishing with course paste and later with a fine one. Or you could boil/heat it a few times in a pickle/tor...

Hi,

The sword mark was used from 1814 till 1953 in two shapes (it changed in 1906) so that could be helpful in dating. The export mark was used from 1853, but that could have been struck later.
I think it is a 20th century (1st half) set.

Hi,

Silver solder needs temperatures much higher than the average soldering iron can handle, you need an open flame with plenty oxygen. I wouldn't recommend it on silverplate.
I would take Tom's advice.
