Hello Tom, Thanks very much for your help, and what a great resource this forum is. The mark on the porringer matches the one on the salt cellar, so if the porringer is known to be by Merrill, the shop must have made the salt cellar also. Please forgive this question if the answer is trivial, but wh...

Thanks Patrick,

I didn't know of that other mark, which is also similar but still faces the opposite way. It's a tricky one. I suppose I'll just have to keep looking!

Best wishes

Thanks Trev. - That's very interesting. Does the book mention how productive Olver/Oliver is thought to have been? Best wishes, Mikael

Odd mark on a salt - like a reverse Merrill Shops mark

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/3516064925.jpg This salt cellar puzzles me. It is about 7 cm wide, very well made and very heavy. When I got it, the cellar was black with tarnish (I don't think it has ever been used) so it could be over 50 years old. The mark is similar to that used by the Merrill ...

Spoons marked 12 Löth and the letter M

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/3512491168.jpg These four spoons each measure about 23 cm. They are engraved on the handle with a goat (or is it meant to be a hart?) holding a heart and the motto Qualis ab Incepto : http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/3512582118.jpg Is it possible to say where these sp...

Exeter teaspoons 1828. Who is maker RO?

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/3511461586.jpg These teaspoons measure ca. 14.5 cm and were made in Exeter in 1828. The hallmarks are a little rubbed but show first the maker, RO, then M for 1828, the rampant lion, the Exeter townsmark, and finally the mark for the reign of William IV. http://img1....

London 1784 - unknown silversmith LG or GS

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/3511283444.jpg These four spoons were made by different silversmiths in different years (they are shown with the oldest spoon on top and the youngest on the bottom), although two of them were made by the Batemans. The spoons vary slightly in size (21.5 - 22.5 cm) but...

Thanks

Hello and thanks ever so much for sharing your insights! The item is about 8 cm tall and 5.5 cm from rim to rim. The glass insert is 6.5 cm tall - but when it is in place, it protrudes some 7 mm above the rim, so perhaps it is not the original insert (it does look old though)? There is no sign of th...

Hello. Does anyone have a suggestion as to the origins of this piece - or indeed its function? Even a hunch would be helpful!

Thanks,

Hi folks,

I wonder if anybody can help me with those two marks on the serpent silver item??? Even an hunch or a suggestion as to where I might find those marks would be extremely helpful.

Thanks!

Brahmfeld & Gutruf

Hello, The maker's mark is for Brahmfeld & Gutruf - a gold- and silverware supplier in Hamburg, Germany, established in 1842 and still in existence (although I think they only do jewelry and watches these days). The company was founded by Johann Friedrich Brahmfeld. Johann Georg Gutruf joined so...

Very unusual marks on a toothpick or condiment jar

Hello, I recently bought this charming piece, which comes with a dark ruby glass insert and may be a toothpick holder or a condiment jar of some sort. The marks are very unusual and I can't find them anywhere. The first mark is round with a lion (or some other large quadruped!) with the letter P bel...
