Re: FG shield or harp hallmark

As Blackstone states in the linked post, the Gély brothers were active as Gély Frères starting 1813. They were active until 1846.
Your spoon is from around 1830.

Re: fork ca. 1800

Hi Theo this is difficult. I assume we have a town mark and a makers mark. Which one do you think is the town mark? I have no interpretation what the left mark shows. On the right I see an animal, a rabbit or a goat or ibex. I found some German cities with rabbits as coat of arms, but it does not lo...

Re: What country and maker could it be?

I am not much of a help, but will make a start. I also see the "12" which is the 12 loth (0.750 finness). JWB is the maker mark. My educated guess goes to Germany, somewhere between 1850 and 1888. Citymark is missing, this makes it a nearly hopeless case. Where can we look further? Your cu...

Re: Figural Spoon Z for Zurich?

Hi Z was the city mark for Zurich in the 1600 and 1700. In the later part of the 1700 the coat of arms was used until around 1840. The Z on your spoon seems casted. It should be stamped. I do not think your spoon is really old. Historismn or younger. Not older than the 1880ies, probably younger. I c...

Hi Theo
Thank you very much for your support. So the spoon is from the 1780ies and was already aged when given as a present.

Is this a spoon from Strassbourg, late 1700?

Hi I got this spoon and tried to identify. I found a good match using Tardy for Strassbourg, France, for the period around 1780-1790. The crowned "13" as city mark could be a fit. The worn crowned mark can be an E or an F, but can also be something else. Maker mark reads LETZ. The spoon ha...

Re: Keep old storage boxes?

Your retailer "Rutishauser" is either Jean Rutishauser (1846-1913) or his son Jean-Antoine (1863-1936), from Geneva. Fits well with the Jezler silver going with it, you dated it around 1900, which may be correct. So your boxes are from 1900 and in bad shape. They have no real historical va...

Re: Safe to use .800 silverware?

Ok, it is 3 against me... :-) I am aware I may be the only barabarian putting my 0.800 silver in the diswasher. But I never had problems, the silver remains shiny. Discoloration usually comes from using it on certain food. I may need to handpolish 2-3 times a year, but I am fine with this. Regards, ...

Re: Safe to use .800 silverware?

Hi Ahrens Jezler Baguette .800 alloy is 80% silver and 20% copper. It does not age, so absolutely safe to use. Go ahead, use it daily. Visible wear after years and decades of use create character and are fine. My coffee spoon is more than 200 years old, my daily flatware is also Jezler Baguette, mor...

Re: Ramu Dufour marks--Swiss Silver

Hi Gerald Jean-Pierre-Louis Ramu-Dufour lived from 1796 to 1852. He was also retailer, not only maker. JayT narrowed the date to 1847-1879. If this Ramu was the retailer, your date narrows to 1847-1852. However, I do not know if another Ramu continued the business. Anyway, you have a nice set, did s...

Re: Swiss spoon with pseudo-marks?

The spoon is likely one in a set, one spoon for each Swiss canton and/or half canton. Usually 22 or 24 spoons. See also the sample in the picture, taken from "Weltliches Silber 2" from the Swiss Federal Museum. If so, the spoon represents the canton Fribourg, not its capital, the city of F...

Re: Swiss spoon with pseudo-marks?

An educated guess, or maybe just a shot in the dark:
We see a soldier dressed in late medeval armor, on a tower, trowing a stone. Maybe a relation to the siege of Morat in 1476 prior to the famous battle? Morat is in the canton Fribourg.

Re: Strange ?fake silver ladle

Hi and welcome to the forum we see a 800 mark which should indicate 80% silver content. But we also see a mark "ITALY". All Italian silver must comply with the marking rule for Italy. See the section "Italian marks". All this is missing here. And yes, there are bubles visible, in...

Re: German/Prussian Silver Goblet. Pos. ca. 1700-1740. (?)

Hi
looked at Berlin marks on Theo's excellent website.
http://silberpunze.freehost.ag/index.php?id=2&sw=Berlin
The "A" on the marks from around 1830 to 1840 remind me a bit on the second mark on your goblet. Just upside down, and half punched.
What do you think?

Re: Just 1 mark

I Think there are many WW marks all over the world.
But a possibility could be Winterthur, Switzerland. Heinrich Wipf (1770-1852), or Jakob Heinrich Wipf (1803-1877)
They have single WW marks without additional marks.

Re: Help with sugar tongue markings

Hi Steve and Trev Thank you! Makes my day, a flea market find. So it is Georg Wintle. I checked the date letter carefully and tend strongly towards 1798. And the linked pictures answer my second question, on the decoration. Obviously the decoration is original, not later. I did not know machine made...
