Re: Question about beaded unmarked frog charm/pendant

Being unmarked makes it very difficult to identify it origin. The granulation on the surface took quite a while as it follows a basic pattern, some of the shot are missing. It would not surprise me if the base sheet and the are fine silver as that is the easiest way to do silver granulation.

Re: Storing sterling and silver plate

What an odd idea. Maybe it was thought up by someone who couldn't remember what they had and it was their way of keeping things separate. They can co-mingle amicably.

Re: WHAT IS THIS PIECE?

A match box holder, openings on the sides exposed the strike area on the sides of the box. Unsure why they had the glass cover, maybe to save metal or for ornamental box-covers?

Re: What was this used for?

The glass would have been deeper and wider, like an old-style champagne glass. the upper part of your piece would have just been for support.

Re: What was this used for?

It looks like a sherbert base, it would have a glass insert ( think wine glass with a short broken stem).

Depending on size, a decanter label. The ones with the chains look better but rattle a bit when pouring.

Re: Chemical problem

I agree, stylistically it looks to be Persian or from that general area. It is odd to be so low in silver content. Below 40% pure, silver starts looking brassy unless the alloy is heavy in nickle and this would affect your chemical reactions colour. If you have you washed (not polished) the item it ...

Re: Modernist Sterling & Quartz Necklace Help ID Maker

It looks like a piece of beginning student work; fairly crude; not too well made. The mark is too indistinct to make even a guess at.

Re: A.F. Towel & Son 1892 ball and stem?

Actually Cheryl these were made as souvenir spoon blanks, I know Towle and sons, Towle Mfg, Meridiam, and at least one other (possibly Whiting, but my memory just failed me) made similar types as blank spoons for bulk purchase by novelty spoon companies onto which they could apply etched or engraved...

Re: A.F. Towel & Son 1892 ball and stem?

I have handled quite a few of these over the years, in 3-4 patterns by different makers. The spoons (teaspoons and demi-tasse) were bought and engraved afterward. I have seen both dated and non-dated versions and a variety of engraved designs. It appears there were several sellers at the fair and th...

Therein lies the rub. Most curators fear any possible questioning of attribution... It would need to have private input.
