Was crushed to open this Elibron Classics edition and discover 544 pages of text completely without the illustrations, quel dommage! Hi Tom, my edition seems to be lacking in a lot of text then. Mostly all images with some text but certainly not 50 pages of text (let alone 500). Looks like there ar...

Hi,

I think it reads "Alpaca, Mexico". Unless there is a maker named Alpaca (or Alpala), I think this is made of the material alpaca (nickelsilver, neu-silber etc are other names for this copper-nickel alloy).

Hi snoopie,

It's Dutch. Made by J.Niekerk, Schoonhoven, The Netherlands.
The mark is used from 1970 till present.
Lovely brooch, but not filigree work.

Hi, Best thing to do is to start practising your soldering skills on nickelsilver (alpaca, neu-silber etc) and other copper alloys. The solder comes in various meltingpoints with the higher melt ones give the stronger bondings. You will always want to start with the high melting ones first if you ne...

Hi Tom and all, That was a nice project. When I studied silversmithing we indeed had to hammer down a cast block of silver to create a fork (same thing as a spoon). When I look into "Orfèvrerie joaillerie, Encyclopédie Diderot et d'Alembert" by Diderot and D' Alembert, the tools used in ...

Thanks blakstone,

I'll make a (mental) note of that mark. I knew there was a logical explanation why it was moved overhere.

Hi,

I made many items (silverware and jewellery) for friends and family. None of them carry any hallmarks.
I don't recognize any of the marks on your ewer, so maybe one of them could be a makers mark. But I were to forge something, I would not sign it.

Hi,

I doubt it's Dutch. The sword doesn't look anything like the Dutch swords used in the 19th and 20th century. It could of course be a makers mark, but the rest of the marks look like pseudomarks to me aswell.

Although they tried, the Spanish never occupied Holland. Around the time that smoking became the craze, Holland had a few colonies in the americas (like present day New York, Suriname etc), so it is very likely that the tradition was carried out through those lines. Of course our ancestors (on all s...

Hi,

It's a copy of a renaissance cup, sorry. AJH de Ruiter made alot of these items in his workshop (source: "Valse Zilvermerken in Nederland" - K.A.Citroen)

All marks except the makers mark and the dolphins (1859-1893) are pseudomarks.

Hi, The "cupel test" is still practised today and they use lead instead of iron to wrap the silver in. The rest is as Bahner explained. Concerning the "tremble" pattern, if you take a graver with a sharp but flat base (like a chisel .. is that a good English word?) and rock it le...
