Hi Bart,

I've searched my books for this one, but can't come up with a match.
The letter below the city mark indicates "kleine keur" (833/000) silver, but I cant see a letter in it. This type of stamping was done in Amsterdam between 1734 and 1807.
The makers mark is also a puzzle to me.

Hi charles-edwards, My Tardy shows the A as being a Vienna mark for 1866 (which would be very early for this candle stick), next to it are a few other A's for 1872 and 1872-1901. Could you shed some light on why those marks were used (inner-outer city) next to the newer hexagonal etc. marks? Also wh...

Hi,

I think this candle stick (probably for an altar) was made around 1900.
Although not my usual taste, somehow this one makes me shiver. It's gorgeous.

Hi,

Since it has a Jack and Jill motive, maybe something to do with water?
Or toothing rings?

Hi Debbie, You simply place regular dishes with food on them (usually pies), but could also be sandwiches etc. Place it in the middle of the table so everyone can take from it what they want, like a high tea. The only place I can think of that still uses them is the Cafe Americain in Amsterdam (in t...

Hi,

This reply has nothing to do with solving the puzzle, but the quadrofoils in the handle are good examples of the neo-gothic style used in the late 1800's.
Great and typical ewer.

Hi,

It is impossible to judge from a photo what kind of a gemstone it is.
I advise taking it to a jeweler/appraiser who is trained in gemmology (preferably someone with a GIA or FGA degree).

Although there are some people here trained in gemmology, this is a silver/gold marks forum.

Hi,

The maker is R.A. Kuipers (mark used between 1832 and 1848), master in Workum.
You should read it as RK above 93 in a square.

Hi, "Pseudomarks" are marks struck by the silversmith to mimic official assay marks, in order to make the item look older. The I is the only official one in my opinion. The style of this "pijp komfoor" (can't think of the English name) is very eclectic and combines English (the b...

Hi, I think they are pseudomarks. The 2 stars is a pseudo makers mark seen on this type, the N could be to mimic a dateletter or the 1795 taxmark of rotterdam. The I (what you see as J) is probaly the 1906-1953 mark for old unassayed items. Does it have horizontal striations in the background of the...
