Re: What-is-it Question LXVI.

Incidentally do you have much knowledge of Kashmiri silver? I am thinking of the small bowl with pierced sides and dragon-like finials on its viking-boat-like ends. I absolutely have to subdue my camera. Not much, just know a few, i guess insignificant things about items that were a part of most ho...

That's a very creative answer, but it didn't hold stomach ache pills. Eastern women love sour things, and the way they enjoy tamarinds and the like, I doubt they have any digestion problems after that :) This object was used as a vinaigrette. You wet some cotton with your favourite perfume, or 'Itar...

What-is-it Question LXVI.

This comes from North India (late 1800s or early 1900s). It is less than an inch in size. What is it? About the design: The shape of this object looks like a 3D paisley, which was one of the most commonly used designs in North India. The design concept of a paisley like this one was mostly associate...

@ byron mac donald Haha. You wish! Very entertaining! :-D @ Kerangoumar I'm going to have to stop giving all those hints, haha! You're almost right. This thing is kept in a purse. The sphere-like box opens in halves, and is used mainly for keeping edible lime paste, which an essential ingredient of ...

have you heard of paan or betel leaf? u put lots of spices on it and fold it into a triangular shape called 'giloree'. These pins prevented the folded triangles from unfolding. They were placed in a casket called 'Khaasdaan' for serving. Paan is widely consumed in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and nea...

Ok, I'll make it easier. It has nothing to do with decoration, rather something to do with something that was eaten, but only in India and in some countries near it.

Snuff box?

I'm guessing this is a snuff-box. It has a carnelian in a sterling silver frame for a lid, and it safely dates back to early 20th century, or before. It has no hallmarks. Can you help me find out more about it? Is it possible it was made in Colonial India, because it came into my hands from India. h...

Hi everyone, I'm a newcomer. Great place to be! My father gave me this medal like thing some years back. It belonged to his maternal grandfather. I have no idea what it signifies. It has no inscriptions or any hints. Its hallmark at the back tells me that it was made in Birmingham in 1915. I couldn'...
