I should have realized that musing would come back to bite me... ;) The basket was probably empty, but I imagine it could have contained a blotter of some sort.

Pewter can be fairly hard too. Best to test the specific gravity. That will distinguish between pewter (~6g/cc), nickel silver (~9g/cc) and solid silvers (~10g/cc).

I've also seen this called an egg spoon, though I don't know if it refers to eating eggs or the egg-shape of the bowl.

I believe that star/number/letters mark is Italian. If the letters are FI, that would indicate Firenze (Florence) as the 'City' (actually region) mark, with the number indicating the registered maker of the item.

Actually, once I realized it was Irish, I googled Irish Jewelry and found the rest. It was your better photo that did the trick. I still hope someone will be able to identify the sponsor's mark.

I believe the 417 indicates the item is 10K gold, the star/number/letter(s) mark indicates the item was made after 1968 [according to the Italian World Marks listing] and also indicates the region and maker (although I don't know where to find the specific information).

I thought you might like my reasoning, so here it is - the hallmarks are pictured upside down, first the hibernia, then the crowned harp, finally the Z (for 1967). Also, the item is usually called a Celtic warrior bracelet and it features the Newgrange Tri-Spiral (over 5000 years old, so I hear).

I believe I see 4 marks here - the 3 in a row [which I can't make out] and to the right what appears to be a sponsor's mark of ?W/JW (just guessing). I think a bit more cleaning might help bring the marks out.

You may be able to use your current scale by rigging a contraption that will suspend the object from your scale's weighing surface. As long as the weight of the device (such as a coat hanger wire bent into a 'C' shape) and the object doesn't exceed your 100 gram maximum.

You don't weigh the water! You only weigh the object [suspended in the water]. It will lose a portion of it's weight, so if you can weigh the object itself, you can perform this test. Also, there is no need to reset the scale's zero - it's just added effort to no effect. When I suspend the object, t...
