Re: Interesting Antique Silver Pear..Its Purpose??

While pure silver has a specific gravity of 10.46, silver that is not pure like coin will be alloyed with other unknown metal/metals. Therefor the specific gravity will be different, depending on the type of alloy/alloys used. Acid testing will reveal the presence of silver with great accuracy when ...

Re: Coin silver eyeglass maker?

Thanks for the input silverly, These glasses appear to date 1st quarter of 19th century, maybe a little into the 2nd quarter so the dates of Jacob Kern would make him too late for any potential as the maker. Trev, Most maker marks found on sliding temple coin and gold in this country are on the insi...

Re: redlich silver mounted boar tooth ?

the problem with using this as a handle is the clip/saddle is swivel mounted so the tooth/handle does not stay parallel with the clip which will allow the handle to rotate freely
thank you for your input

Re: Interesting Antique Silver Pear..Its Purpose??

not to punch silver marks on an object in silver and why did they formerly start to punch silver marks in the first place? Early American silver had no marks unless the maker was proud enough to do so. Many examples, especially small ones, exist to prove this. This also applies to Native American s...

Re: Interesting Antique Silver Pear..Its Purpose??

The question about silver or not is valid but the obvious denting in the images implies a softer material than usually used for silver plate though not proof positive in this case.

redlich silver mounted boar tooth ?

Clearly marked with Redlich logo, sterling & boar tooth, 11" length, 1 1/2" dia at the swivel saddle/clip I would like suggestions as to the purpose of this object. hook at end is somewhat crudely soldered and might not be original as the rest is finely constructed as normal for Redlic...

W. Settler mark info?

Coin spoon with W. Settler mark and 3 pseudo marks. Identify town, maker dates and first name, please? Would guess NY as similar pseudo markings on known NY & Phil. pieces have been seen, as well as family history from NY. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a19/butterball2/th_3-13-2011Settlecoin3....

Re: Gorham figural tongs

They are independant hinged arms with a spring load and function very well. I have seen several Japanese netsuke and carvings on bamboo canes [Japan or China?] depicting people with exagerated long legs and/or arms. I would guess they are part of some tale but do not remember any with a long Queue.
