Re: CARPENTER, Joseph (Grimwade p.459)

Thanks Pat. This sort of information is useful on many levels . It gives us : The date of the death of Joseph Carpenter. That the Sarah Carpenter recorded by Grimwade on page 317 was his widow and not that of Thomas Carpenter . Although he was probably connected with Thomas Carpenter (there were pro...

There is a distinct possibility that this mark is connected with John Simpson, a silver buckle maker .

SIMPSON, John (Grimwade p.396)

This is believed to be the mark of 1789 mark of John Simpson , a silver bucklemaker http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n170/clivetaylor/is%20mark_zpsflk2b8i9.jpg Grimwade gives him as having registered a mark as bucklemaker at 5 Rose and Crown Court , Foster Lane. Re: DEARMOR, John (Grimwade p.487)

It seems very likely that Grimwade misread John DearmEr's entry as John DearmOr. As Pat says the dating tends to indicate that the John DearmOr given as a smallworker on page 96 is not the same man

Re: COLEY, Simeon (Grimwade p.400, 468-9)

Pat has recently discovered that Simeon Coley's Freedom by Redemption in the Company of Glovers is dated on the top and bottom of the paper 25 January 1774. Whether the 1773 date previously given is an error , or whether the actual Freedom papers are issued slightly later than than the grant is unkn...

It is just possible that this is the same man as the John Bennett listed by Grimwade on page 392 as a Bucklemaker in junior partner ship to John Beedall.

Re: Pre-war London hallmark...

It is possible that the mark you recall may not have been a silver hallmark , but a registered trade mark . It's outside my period but I think platers were also required to register marks from the early 19th century to avoid them passing off plated goods as sterling .

Re: WHITFORD, Samuel I (Grimwade p.669)

This has opened a new can of Whitford worms. It seems that the 1765 marriage of a Samuel Whitford , Silversmith , to Sarah Parry is the appropriate marriage for Samuel Whitford the Silver Bucklemaker The Samuel Whitford 1754 marriage to Mary Nairne is probably that of Samuel the Optician . 2 January...

Re: British silver buckles from 18th century? William Hall?

As you correctly surmised these are English shoe buckles dating from between 1785 ( when the Cameo George Head duty mark was introduced) and c1790 (when date letters began to be used in London) . Probably mens . I'm almost certain they are London and the maker is probably William Harris who register...

RM mark on tongs 1770 -1775 period

There is one maker of sugar tongs whose RM mark is distinctive for having two or perhaps 3 pellets in between the R and the M. He (or she ) made cast pierced, convex arm , three piece feather edged ,and bright-cut examples. The Lion Passant Guardant appears to be the "hairy " London one , ...
