Quatrefoil WW mark on Cast Tongs

Can anyone shed light on the maker of these tongs please ? I'm not entirely sure if they are London, although the Lion Passant does not look provincial. They are the usual three piece construction, but a curious feature is that the Assay Lion is punched below the join on one side , and the makers ma...

Re: WALKER, Brook (Grimwade p.388, 401)

28 November 1798
The will of Edward Higgs Saint Leonard Shoreditch London was proved at London at PCC [TNA / PROB 11/1315/235]
In it Higgs' daughters Mary Thurgood and Elizabeth Walker inherited his house on Paul Street, confirming the likely origin of Walker's wife Elizabeth.

The bequest to his "daughters Mary Thurgood and Elizabeth Walker of his house on Paul Street confirms the suggestion above that Elizabeth was the wife of Brook Walker , the silver bucklemaker viewtopic.php?f=74&t=23675

Re: 10 Years of the Forum on www.925-1000.com

Congratulations to everyone who have made this the best silver collectors /research site on the Web. In particular to TTT , the Team of Trevor and Tom who make it all work . And to the many friends, alas some deceased, I've made on it. And a few "enemies" (in the nicest possible way ) who ...

Re: London strange hallmarks?

I agree with Thomas and Trevor . The "l" looks to be in an unusual cartouche (punch) ,the Lion Passant Guardant is in the post 1756 onward form and looks more like a dachshund ,and is not compatible with the dateletter for 1746. The Leoparts Head looks to have an exaggerated crown. Most co...

Re: London 1730

Forbes " Hallmark" is rather an unfairly neglected book. When you get your copy Phil you'll find it very readable. And so useful. Like me, I suspect that you'll skip the first few centuries , and most of the very technical stuff on assay processes . But the information on the Goldsmiths' C...

Re: London 1730

Could be very well ED for Mose Eden. Certainly looks like Grimwade 563. Gets my vote anyhow ! This mark was almost certainly not confined to Britannia standard. Not a legal requirement to change until 173, see below To clarify one should refer to J.S. Forbes " Hallmark" , an often overlook...

Re: WIGAN, Edward (Grimwade p.701)

The above pedigree provides two vital pieces of evidence for the long held belief that Edward Wigan (Grimwade p.701) was the son of Thomas Wigan of Bristol(Grimwade p.719). Firstly the information that his mother was a Sarah . The apprenticeship of William Brimblecombe in 1755 mentions a Sarah as th...

Re: London silver hallmarks 1751

This gets more interesting. Certainly the Grimwade mark no 2974 is the best match, the incursions at the base being distinctive . He was certainly in partnership with William Williams from 1740 . He died, according to Grimwade p.770', in 1756 and it was his son Thomas Whipham II who entered the part...

Re: London silver hallmarks 1751

Thanks for the pictures. I was not referring to West London, but to a place to well to the west of London ! The Bristol , Exeter and Bath area, but did not want to embarrass you by asking you to reveal location. If originally entended for use in a synagogue , and made for, or in, London , they would...

Re: London silver hallmarks 1751

Further to my above post , I forgot to mention that The London Smallworkers Register of 1739 -1758 is one of the two London Lost Registers of the eighteenth century , and there is therefore no surviving record of the marks registered in them . I must also apologise for the sloppy proof reading of th...

Re: London silver hallmarks 1751

First of all, to put your mind at rest, the marks looks absolutely right. All pieces sent was assay were required to be stamped by the sponsor before being submitted for assay . They were then tested by the Assay Office, and if up to standard, hallmarked . If, in the rush to get work out , an assaye...
