Re: Unknown marker

Hi Christian, Your Swan looks French . The swan mark with the regional assay office symbol for Saumur, introduced in 1983 and used until 1970, served as an import identification mark on silver watchcases, boxes and jewelry. The swan mark indicates that the item is at least a minimum standard of 800 ...

Re: Help with sugar bowl marks and engraving

Good day Kiwi Doug

You are very right my mistake, the maker’s mark must have been registered before or on the year of the used date letter. I believe you will become a good silver gynecologist.

Re: Help wanted on old Gold Watch

Hi, Come to think about it your watch is a pendant watch made around the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century in Germany and on a later stage converted into a wrist watch. Hence the round and beautiful decorated backside of this watch, which is not very usual for a wrist watch. Normally a ...

Re: Help wanted on old Gold Watch

Hi, Gouda Assay Office for gold 585 fineness, used 1955 to Date. Weight mark. These marks had a simple coded system to indicate the items weight. By taking the value of the number inside the frame of the mark and multiplying it by 5, one is able to determine the weight of the item in grams (4 x 5 = ...

Re: Help wanted on old Gold Watch

Hi, Thanks for your PM This frame shape of the Squirrel has been used 1880-1934. Looking at your lady wrist watch, which misses its crown, it yells late art nouveau period. Wrist watches became popular after the First World War. I believe your wrist watch has been made between circa 1913-1920. The e...

Re: Help with sugar bowl marks and engraving

Hi Kiwi Doug,

Correct, if you only showed me this particularly London date letter d, I could not make a decision between both possibilities. Perhaps an expert could, but not me. The duty mark in this case is a good indicator, to narrow down the date letter d, for 1819-1820.

Re: Help with sugar bowl marks and engraving

Hi, Leopard’s head crowned for London, date letter d, for 1819-1820, and duty mark for George III. Hence the London date letter for 1779-1780 looks almost the same but duty marks were introduced in 1784-1785 George III facing left, on a rectangular outline with clipped corners. As of 1786-87 oval fo...

Re: Russian enamel box with diamonds; genuine?

Hi, Postnikov answered both your questions. 1. Most fakes are of low quality and/or the marks are not full proof and /or dubious, and the fakes are getting better. Your box carries the three-element Russian Domestic Hallmarks 1908-1927 oval shape > 2zl, and the Assay office letter for Leningrad. Doe...

Many thanks to Tworsch, but we still have more questions. Russia domestic gold and platinum hallmarks 1958-1994. The main hallmark with the core image of the Soviet star with the hammer and sickle, and the numerical gold fineness as 583. The assay office mark in the form of a Cyrillic letter added t...

Hi, Same story. Joure started at 2002 and the Joure Z marks are in a rectangular shield with cut corners. The Gouda Z marks have 4 corners and 2 bended horizontal lines. The Gouda Z mark looks a bit like a blown up rectangle. As a matter of fact you can see if a silver object is assayed in Gouda or ...

Re: Let me know please when this miniature was made.

Hi dear Elena,

Joure started in 2002 and the Joure sword is in an oval shield, as Gouda used the sword mark, as of 1953 to date, without an oval shield. As a matter of fact you can see if a silver object is assayed in Gouda or has been assayed in Joure .

Re: Let me know please when this miniature was made.

Hi, Pseudo Adreas crosses. The sword mark was used on small size articles that did not have sufficient weight or space to stamp a standard mark, an assay office mark, and a date letter. Beginning in 1953, the small item sword mark was stamped with the metal fineness of 835 on the blade. The sword on...

Hi, Looking at your oversized photo’s I feel a bit awkward.
