Re: Unknown combination of hallmarks

Hi, This will add only a little to the perfect answer given by Silverport. The ‘I’ mark. Duty mark for unguaranteed standard of fineness new gold and silver objects of national origin. Your photo shows the ‘I’ mark 250 minimum fineness, used 1906-1953. It refers to the old ‘S’mark (1853-1859) descri...

Re: 18th Century Dutch Spoon

Hi, Herewith I partly answer my own question. It was not uncommon to have the marks punched on the spoon bowl. Please compare the marks of an Enkhuizen spoon and Amsterdam with the smirched odd looking marks on your spoon. We also know that during the end of the 19th century plenty of replicas were ...

Re: 18th Century Dutch Spoon

Hi, Just a thought. Would it not make more sense if the hallmarks were punched in a vertical row on the stem of the spoon. Instead of on the bowl? Or was it perhaps common practice in the 18th century to have the hallmarks punched like we see on the spoon. Also the date letter looks a bit odd to me ...

Re: 18th Century Dutch Spoon

Hello Miles,

Perhaps top from left to right: crowned lion rampant for the province control mark, makers’ mark (?) Bottom left to right: date letter (?) Andreas- crosses crowned (?) for Amsterdam.
Pseudo/ fake marks? I am not sure wait and see what the others say.

Re: Help with Daznig Mark

Hi, My reference book the Silver Lexicon by Janjaap Luijt calls it a spoon vase. Most of the spoon vases are pierced silver work, inside a cobalt blue glass liner. Along the top edge of the frame, twelve silver eyelets, to hang twelve matching tea spoons. I believe the vase could be used for holding...

Re: Help with Daznig Mark

Hi Blackstone, Perhaps a bit confusing, but as I understand you, an alderman in Danzig could use his assayer mark as a maker’s mark on his own items made, but he could not assay his own work. He also was allowed to continue to use his assay mark as a maker’s mark, although he was no more an alderman...

Re: Dutch Spoon Ring

Hi Sergant Silver, To me the material of the spoon, made into a ring, does look like pewter. Do not see any valid silver hallmark. The lion with seven arrows in his claw represents the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. For more information see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Republic" on...

Re: Rat tail ? Spoon

Hi,

Try to learn and read. Please show us a clear photo of the Dutch marks. Next time also show all the marks in one go. Not one by one. On your last photo, the unclear left inserted mark, looks like Dutch maker's mark.

Re: Rat tail ? Spoon

Hi Trev,

Yes I believe this Birth spoon or Memorial spoon has been made in the antique style, perhaps the Assay Office Letter reads, M for Schoonhoven. However let us wait for more information provided by Thames03, before drawing a conclusion.
Best regards,

Re: Rat tail ? Spoon

Hi Thames03, Regarding the marks: the B could be a malformed Dutch date letter for 1836, supposed to be in a circle, the flower like mark not Dutch, perhaps both marks are non Dutch or so called pseudo marks. The only mark I recognize is the Minerva head used 1814-1905. The identifying assay office ...

Re: Help me please to identify the craftsman of my flatware.

Forgot to mention, Gerritsen started a joined venture with a family member of van Kempen and became known as Gerritsen en van Kempen silver factory. Fierce competitor of Van Kempen & Begeer an other well known silver factory .

Re: Fish Spoon & Ladel Unknown Maker

Hi Elimiz,
FB above * for A.J.W. Bouwman (Firma Frans Brugsma), city of Groningen, date 1924-1932.
Regional Assay Office letter E=Groningen and F is for Leeuwarden.
I believe the FB 130 in a bow tie could be for the same maker. Perhaps an unregistered mark but I am not sure.
