This pattern appears on page 135 of Ian Pickford's "Silver Flatware" figure 203 - no name but simply described as "Scottish King's Shape Rococco End" and the examples illustrated by RG&S with die-struck crests. I have a basting spoon in this pattern, and also four dessert spo...

I am seeing clear Gothic "tails" on that letter, in one of the pix, so I would vote for 1921.

Do we think the maker is Alfred Clark or Alexander Crichton ???

Bright Cut Spoon

I would greatly appreciate any help identifying the source and maker of this small bright cut spoon. I originally bought it as Scottish Provincial but am now not even certain it originates from the British Isles. Stewart PS And no bright spark suggest it is from East Africa in the 1950s !!! http://h...

Culme confirms this as the mark of Karl Karlsson, and him as making enameled silver wares, including a waist buckle of circa 1903.

PS On further thought the incorporation of the ship, a sailing brig, would be an obvious "canting" sign for Messrs. Brigg and Son.

Also your photo is not very clear of the date letter, but 1914 would be a more likely date for this maker.

The actual maker's or sponsor's mark is the initials "CC" for Charles Cooke (Frith Street) who is confirmed by Culme as the chief mounter of sticks, canes and umbrellas to Messrs. Brigg and Son of St. James Street from about 1889, then at 56 Frith Street. The most obvious explanation for t...

Many thanks for that suggestion, which elicited a prompt and helpful reply from the Assay Office.

That is the mark of Howard Jesse Brown who first registered with us in 1938. He is no longer registered.

I would at least consider a colonial source, especially the possibility of a Scottish smith working in colonial India, which would be supported by the slightly crude "fiddle" features. A quick look, however, at my two relevant references, does not throw up an obvious candidate.

I am not seeing much in the mark other than the crown, the "A", and a wreath, but in this context surely the "rod" in "rod and crown" refers to a "sceptre" which with the crown, and an orb, are the traditional symbols of kingship in Britain.

It is indeed a calling card case, and the curved shape is so it could be carried in a front pocket of the waistcoat or vest of a well-fed gentleman.

Confusing French, and ? Dutch marks on Spoons

The marks on these spoons probably from the mid 1700s are really confusing us !!! There appear to be three "sets" of marks from three periods... 1. A set of four marks including the original maker's mark of "MT" with a crown, two other marks - lions ??? and lastly a clear letter ...
