Thank you so much. I went back in with a jewelers glass and it does look like a dash between the two letters which are definitely an F S as you noted.

We are trying to identify the marks and if anyone knows what this item is that would be nice too. Certainly an interesting piece. There are similar marks on the bottom and the lid. I know nothing about this item. I can't readily tell if it's silver or silver plated. I am assuming it's an American pi...
