Many thanks for your reply, Pat. I thought it was most probably a Norwegian mark. It's one I've not come across before.

Perhaps Tom could add it to the Norwegian page?

Scandinavian Brooch - Maker?

Does anyone recognise the mark on this Scandinavian brooch? I can't find this mark documented on this site.

Thanks.

The marks are for Edinburgh 1936. The only maker I can think of is Edinburgh silversmith Thomas Kerr Ebbut - a specialist in Scottish clan jewellery etc.

I think what we have to remember is that people like Horner and other makers I've mentioned above were not making silver items for collectors and future generations of hallmark scrutineers. He was making a living and would have been a mug to turn down an order from, say, John Thompson & Son for ...

I don't know about research material but years of experience and comparative research has revealed that the major players in the thimble making business made thimbles for other silversmiths, jewellers, wholesalers, retailers, factors etc. This is widely accepted in thimble circles and I can't think ...

Here are the marks on a Chester 1896 thimble. The maker's mark is Gourdel Vales & Co. To the left of the size number is a Registered Design Number 210800. This refers to a design known as the 'Princess May' daisy pattern registered by Charles Horner on April 18, 1893. Ergo, the thimble was made ...

With regard to Charles Horner. His thimbles are all....without exception marked with CH. Best wishes, Mike. I think I know what you mean, Mike. The point I was making however, is that Horner made thimbles for many others and these thimbles are found with other makers'/sponsors' (retailers, jeweller...

Very probably. I would perhaps use the word "Edwardian" to describe the ensemble.

I'm going to correct myself here. On further reflection the size number 17 on your thimble is typical of Henry Griffith & Sons, rather than Horner. The border pattern (interlocking asterisks) known as "Louise" was also one used by HG&S on their steel cored Dreema thimbles as well a...

To the best of my knowledge CR&Co has so far not been identified. What is likely, however, is that your thimble was made by Charles Horner. Most late nineteenth and early twentieth century Chester hallmarked thimbles were made either by Charles Horner or Henry Griffith & Sons. Both thimble m...

This is a page from a 1930s Henry Griffith & Sons catalogue. Your thimbles is an adult full chased design.... 6d.

Made by Henry Griffith & Sons of Leamington Spa in the 1930s. This thimble was available in 3 styles: "plain holed" (dimple top), "half chased" (dimple over daisy border) and "full chased" (all over daisy pattern). Woolies sold them for a tanner (6d) a piece. Regard...

The Dorcas thimble was first launched in 1884 (patent 8954, June 14, 1884). Early Dorcas thimbles were not marked as such but were stamped PAT (and occasionally Patent) and size number. In 1905 the improved Dorcas was introduced and the word DORCAS, CH and a size number first appeared on the thimble...

Vesta Case, Maker J.F

Can anyone identify the maker of this vesta case, Chester 1887? I thought it might be James Fenton but the 5 different James Fenton marks I've seen all have a round pellet between the two letters. Regards/carling https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg

The "u" is actually the number 11, a size number. The design is "half chased" - plain dimple top with daisy pattern border. The thimble was made in the 1930s - an austere time when Charles Horner and a few other thimble makers (eg Henry Griffith & Sons, James Swann & Son)...

Can anyone identify the maker's mark on this tiny vinaigrette? The marks are quite rubbed but appear to be T&WS. Any help with identifying the date letter would be much appreciated too. https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg Thanks. carling
