I've had a wander round the Bexfield website and there is on there an item with the exact same J E mark attributed to John Evans II 1848, so that about clinches it for me, Thanks for your time and help, Eric. .
Thanks for your response Miles, looking at the one in your link you could almost believe it was made, or at least designed by the same person although it's quite a bit shorter than the one I have, 2.5" as against 4" tall. Eric. .
