I've had a wander round the Bexfield website and there is on there an item with the exact same J E mark attributed to John Evans II 1848, so that about clinches it for me, Thanks for your time and help, Eric.

Thanks for your response Miles, looking at the one in your link you could almost believe it was made, or at least designed by the same person although it's quite a bit shorter than the one I have, 2.5" as against 4" tall. Eric.
