Call me a cynic, but might it be a "tourist spoon"? I.e. designed to be bought by pilgrims who visited the "Holy Headland"? (well, the wealthier ones anyway).

That design of Lion makes me think it may be Dutch - check the information on Dutch makers on this site and see if it may help. If it is Dutch, we may have to move your post.

Birmingham, 1925 I would say. No idea about the maker, however.

I don't know who the maker is, but is there any way of getting a close up of the date letter? The shape of the shield corresponds to sometime between 1918 and 1967.

While the date letter is not that clear, it looks like the "c" for 1858 (6 years after reg mark). Mark looks to be that of Francis Higgins (mid 19th century).

Good question. Maybe because people are interested in identifying old silver, not "new silver"? Maybe because there are far too many new makers to property document? For newer silver in relation to English silver, the Assay Office (if still around) is a good place to contact for more modern makers. ...

It's certainly not Sterling Silver :) It is Silverplate made by, I believe, the Ellis-Barker Silver Comany. That company used various and difference marks on many of it's products lines (menorahs generally features on candy/sweet dishes). It was a British company, formed in Birmingham in 1860 (I thi...

Philip All sterling marked in England was allocated a "Date Letter" (in your case M). If you explore http://www.925-1000.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and go to the English hallmarks, you will find tables of date letters. At the risk of generalising and being over simp...

Helen From the photographs on your website, I doubt that your pieces are Sterling Silver. A pretty good rule of thumb is if doesn't have the Lion Passant then it is not likely going to be silver, especially on a larger item. Manufacturers and individual silversmiths have always gone to great lengths...

Charles Generally, references post 1825 are not very good or available. In relation to London silversmiths, try Culme’s The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths, Jewellers and allied Traders 1838-1914 (if you can find a copy under, say, $300 US?). The following are those books I can recommend as goo...

Hi

Hmm, S, Walton Smith used the mark SWS in Birmingham in 1893. The marks are for London, 1910, so it may be possible that Mr. Smith had created a company and had registered his mark in London.

Hi

The Scottish (Glasgow) firm of W. Miller & Co used a WM & Co hallmark, but theirs was in a rectangle, not in three overlapping circles. Apart from the above maker, I have no record of such a maker.

D&S - Birmingham - 1913 - best guess is that its Deykin & Son, manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

As for the Irish piece - date letter sounds like that for 1964. My references are not great for post 1900 makers, so can't help you with this maker.

Hmmm, I am beginning to doubt myself on this one. Two reasons:] 1) No evidence of a date letter that even looks remotely like the one in question 2) Unusual to have the Date Letter between the Town Mark and the Lion Passant. Should go in Order - Sterling / Town / Date May be pseudo marks used to giv...

Hi

The mark on it's side on the far left - would that be the letters EP? As in Electro Plated? I say this because the marks seem to me to be Silverplate marks, as opposed to Sterling Silver (where we would expect a Lion Passant for example).
