Hello all To shed some light on this debate, and I quote from Jacksons: 1/ Platinum marking were introduced from 1975 onwards only (after Statute of 1973). 2/ However, given it is platinum and not sterling silver, there is NO lion passant 3/ Instead, an "Orb and Cross" mark is used. to indicate plat...

From your description, they are silver plate. From what I believe, the Trumpt mark was only used by Dixon on plate, not on sterling. A? is probably A1, indicating the (purported) quality of the plating.

Hi

"A hand holding plumes" is the mark of Atkin Bros, large scale British makers.

Neruda is correct. I have a Napkin Ring, made by them and stamped with the Hardy Brother's retailing mark, H Bros being a major retailer in Sydney.

The photo of the hallmarks is not that clear, but they may be English markings - apart from a lack of a maker's mark (not that surprising given they were obviously exported hence the "Sterling" indicator), they could be Sheffield work, assayed in 1914. Check out the British section on this very site...

John (a) Interesting mark. The only maker with a Trumpet in English plating circles I have come across is James Dixon & Sons. This sounds like substantially different. (b) Doubtful. ANything Sterling would be marked as such. (c) Hard to say. Maybe they were not used very much? Perhaps the platin...

Might it be D & F (with the & being rubbed out)? If so, your maker is Deakin & Francis Ltd, a large scale producer / manufacturer.

Hmm, from the marks it was imported silver, marked with the London import marks for.....ummmm.... I may be corrected but I would say 1907. Is the importer's mark AGK or AGH? Or AGR? (There is a A G Rogers recorded in the Chester makers marks for 1836 to 1883, but in that case the mark is in one circ...

My guess (if the marks are authentic) is London, 1887. Maker? Don't know.

I may be corrected on this, but it is my understanding that no English plate marks ever featured a Date Letter - Date Letters were applied by the relevent Assay Office when "certifying" a piece of Sterling Silver. The same rules and regulations did not apply to Plate.

"A", like "A1" may have been an indicator of the (real or claimed) quality/thickness of the plating. Also, I believe that the mark is that of Elkington & Co - see here http://www.antiquesilverspoons.co.uk/canteenmakers.htm

From the markings, I would say:

Maker - John Aldwinckle & Thomas Slater (good makers)
Date: 1892
Assay Town: London

Cheers

Your dating is right - the piece is from 1891. I confess I don't know the maker - not unusual as most of the regular references are fairly atrocious post 1850. For a good cheap reference, try: Title: Jackson's Hallmarks English, Scottish, Irish Silver and Gold Marks From 1300 to the Present Day Pock...

Using my version of Jacksons, and looking at my own pieces, the mark is that of George Adams. He employed many journeymen silversmiths on a "per piece" basis.

It is not an exact match, but JD & S (with a bugle) is James Dixon and Sons (English makers).
