I can't confirm his as the maker, but the dates listed in Jacksons for him (1854-1857) are a mighty fine fit :)

I would hesitantly suggest George Natter - mark is quite similar (Jacksons page 219), mark entered in 1773, no record of last mention so quite possible that he was still around in 1800.

Hi there The mark looks to be the EPNS markings for Mappin & Webb. "Mappin & Webb were established in 1797, but it was not until the late 19th Century that they emerged as one of the largest manufacturers and retailers of silver in the UK. In the late 19th Century two branches of the Mappin ...

Hmm, Lambe's mark appears to have a "cross" not a pellet seperating the letters. Jacksons shows his mark being entered in 1783. The list of goldsmiths shows a John Lamb (sic) mark entered 1783 lastest mention 1791. Jacksons shows the mark of John Lautier on page 218 - dated 1776, earliest ...

I have heard that Carrington & Co produced some silver plated items - perhaps they may be the maker?

Hi Miles

Yes, I only used Heming as an example of the letter. I can't help but think that the second letter may be a "W" - what do you think?

Hi Miles

My gut reaction was that the first letter is "T" - as in a "curly" version. Like the mark of Thomas Heming.

Am in a rush, hence the brief answer

Confirmed. This was the mark of Walter & John, circa late 19th century. See Jacksons (pocket edition) page 80.

Might it be a Z with small A & J letters on either side of it - that is, the mark of A & J ZImmerman, 20th century manufacturers?

Whilst I do not know who the maker is, it is interesting that the maker's mark of overlapping circles seems to have "overstamped" what would have been the original maker's mark.

Would look to be the Birmingham mark for imported goods. Date wise, oh, 1905 I would guess. The "maker" is actually the sponsor/importer. I don't know who that is.

Miles, you are right to query the cartouche. It is quite distinct, with convex (?) sides and tops. Burrow's mark is quite diffierent - usually just cut corners with a square. On the other hand, I can't see to see another likely suspect in the London lists. Perhaps an unrecorded mark? Fernando, to wh...

Mike and Miles Thanks for your comments. Miles, my comments were solely based on the shape of the duty mark (for reasons unknown to me the other photos were not working?), but on reflection, your comments seem correct and I would, especially on the basis of the George Murray mark, agree with you. Well, it looks to be Newcastle assayed. Unsure why there is no date letter, but you have a male duty mark, which helps. Personally think its betwen 1821 and 1839 (1829-1831 specifically if pushed). I would hazard a guess at George Murray but he died 1816 (marked entered 1805). May still be him - har...

Hi there

No, your marks are fine. They are just not 30 years old. The date letter is for 1979, meaning the ingot is now 27 years old.

Scorp I'm in agreement with Miles and Mike. Notwithstanding difficulties with the exact shape of the hallmarks, the thing that is definitive for me is the style; which, as my learned colleagues have stated, is vert Arts n Crafts., and would therefore date to 1886. I have one or two pieces from the s...
