Many thanks Banher !
Even if this spoon will remain unidentified for a while, I can conclude at least that it is German.
I agree whith your age estimation even if I thought that it was a bit older (say 1830-1850).

Thanks again for your help.

Help needed with german spoon (Greiffenberg ?)

Hello, I have an old simple spoon which is rather light (40 gr for 22 cm) and I do not find a right match between the hallmarks and my documentation. There is no maker's mark, only a 12 for silver purity and some animal in a circle (either a winged lion or a dragon) as a town mark. There is also a l...

Thanks a lot Bahner !
I have noticed that there is no hallmark from Mainz on the german page of this web site. Do you think that this one could be added ? If yes, who is going to insert it ?
Thanks again.

Ladle from Mainz ?

Hi, I have received a ladle which could be from Mainz. In fact I did not find a perfect fit with the marks in my reference books (Wyler's). Mainz town mark used to bear a wheel (or two) and at some period it also had a shield outline like the one on the ladle. But I did not find the right combinatio...

Hi Pat, Tardy's book, which is my reference, represents exactly this kind of crown over an L for Lisbon 1881-1886, but within an ellips , not within the 6-sided polygonal shape which is present on this hallmark. This discrepancy lead me to think that it could be a later hallmark, sometime between 18...

Origin of a silver statue (portuguese ?)

Hi, I have a small silver statue (15 cm, 180 gr) which I believe was made in Lisbon (Portugal) at the beginning of the XXth century, but I am not sure. Does anybody recognize the town mark precisely and also the maker's mark, in order to get an accurate age ? Here is the statue: http://dinio.free.fr...

Origin of a ladle

Hi, I have a big silver ladle in fiddle pattern, for which I cannot identify the origin. Here is the ladle: http://dinio.free.fr/Silver/Ladle2/Ladle.jpg And here are the marks : http://dinio.free.fr/Silver/Ladle2/Hallmarks.JPG The 'c' letter looks like a letter date, the eagle like a town mark, then...

Serving spoon european looking, but from where?

Hi, I have a serving spoon that I believe to be silver, but not completely sure. It looks beginning of XIX century and has 3 marks that I interpret as the town mark, the maker's mark and the letter date. But I am unable to find a correct fit in my international references. Due to the date letter, ca...

Hi, Definatelly your candlesticks are in 84 zolotnik silver (87.5%) and were assayed in 1893. It seems that the assayer 'OC' is unknown. Initially I thought that the town mark was for Saint-Petersburg, but I found a 'OSTROCHOxxKI' silversmith in Warsaw. You should check your town mark carefully with...

Sorry again, you are right: WE-WF is on the spoons with capital letter B, and GS-WF is on the spoon with small letter q. Moreover I made a mistake with one date: capital letter B indicates year 1797-8. For the sake of completeness here are the 4 sets of marks punched on these items: 1776: http://din...

Here are the pictures corresponding to these forks : the set of 5 tables forks and 5 dessert forks, a close up of the hallmarks, and en enlargement of the import mark for France. This import mark represents a weevil ('un charançon' in french) and was valid from 10-05-1838 until 30-05-1864. After th...

Sorry for my question about the pattern name in my above post. I did not read your answer carefully, Miles, probably because I was so pleased with the Hester Bateman identification.

Thank you very much Miles, I am really confused to have misunderstood the direction of the maker's marks. The one I thought struck in the reverse way was indeed the only one aligned with the date mark and the lion passant! What a beginner I am! But I am also really pleased to learn that this set was...

Set of 7 spoons London 1776 : who is the maker?

Dear forum members, I would need your help to identify the maker of a rather interesting set of spoons. This set is made of 3 large spoons and 4 dessert spoons. They have a simple style but their handle has some decoration on the edges and are engraved on top with a lion. Here are the pictures of th...

German/central european (?) silver and bone ladle

Hello, I recently acquired at an auction a small ladle (10' and 4 oz) made in silver and bone. It appealed me because of its style which is simple and looks rather old, and also because of the bone handle which is not so common on a ladle. Here is the ladle: http://dinio.free.fr/Silver/Ladle1/Ladle....
