Re: Marks on Dutch silver chatelain

Thanks Peter. The only one I now need help with is the mark top-right, which has the initials JTS (or TJS) above a pair of crossed axes. I don't have access to better images - sorry.

Re: Marks on Dutch silver chatelaine

I think I have managed to track down one of the makers.

The letters inside the elongated cartouche, with the pointed ends (the last in the image above) read as WK122. I believe this is the mark of Willem Jansz Kooiman, a silversmith in Schoonhoven working from 1856 to 1886.

Marks on Dutch silver chatelain

I am trying to identify the maker's marks on a Dutch silver chatelaine, possibly dating from 1841. I have created a composite image to show all the various marks, which include the typical dagger, the lion passant mark for 833 grade (pre-1953), the date letter "G" and, potentially, two mak...

Re: Squirrel on a Norwegian silver spoon

I think I've answered my own question - I believe the small backward-facing "C" is the mark for Thorvald Marthinsen.

Squirrel on a Norwegian silver spoon

Following on with the Scandinavian theme, I have one more item here with a mark that appears incomplete, but is marked for Norwegian silver. Any suggestions who might have made this? https://oldschoolantiques.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/squirrel_spoon_01.jpg These are the only marks ... https:/...

Thanks again Trev. I was looking for a picture, but have now spotted the textual reference.

Re: Lund & Svendsen? Butter knife mark ...

Certainly a possibility. The photo wasn't very clear, but comparing it with another spoon in the set, the mark is the same, and is clearly the one for Magnus, although plate in this instance. Thank you again. This is the mark on that other spoon ... https://oldschoolantiques.co.uk/wp-content/uploads...

Re: Possible Alf Lohne mark on sugar pincers

Thanks Trev. Yes, it could be. I'd read it as A Loh, but it could easily be A Sch on second examination. Although most of Scharning's output seems to have been enamelled jewellery, similar to David Andersen, I did find a silver-plated set of sugar pincers, to a very sinilar design, clearly marked fo...

Lund & Svendsen? Butter knife mark ...

Another of the Scandinavian silver pieces, this one marked clearly for W Svendsen ... but which Svendsen is this? Apologies that it's not a very crisp photo, but hopefully clear enough .... https://oldschoolantiques.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/w_svendsen_butter_knife_01.jpg I am familiar with C...

Possible Alf Lohne mark on sugar pincers

I have had some success identifying marks on a series of Scandinavian silver items, mostly from Norway, and the majority from silversmiths in Trondheim. However, this one eludes me. Any suggestions? https://oldschoolantiques.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/possible_alf_lohne_silver_mark_01.jpg I di...

Re: Confirmation requested of possible Hanau pseudo marks

Thanks for the welcome Peter. Yes, as far as I know all these examples are confirmed as silver, not plate. If the attribution to Hanau is correct, c1880-1900, then they are likely to be 800 grade, not Sterling. I appreciate that some Hanau pieces do carry an "800" grade mark, but it seems ...

Confirmation requested of possible Hanau pseudo marks

I'm hoping that members can confirm (or otherwise!) that these marks belong to a Hanau silversmith. I have found three examples of the same mark, all applied to heavily repoussé'd examples of a sugar sifter, and also to a pair of decorative salts with glass liners. https://oldschoolantiques.co.uk/wp...

Maker's Mark on Sheffield Plate candelabrum

I am trying to identify a maker's mark on a Sheffield Plate cendelabrum. https://oldschoolantiques.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/ow_silver_mark_01.jpeg It's a very distinctive mark that is likely to date from the end of the C19th, given that it states “England”. I did wonder if it could be Willia...
