Re: How to open shakers that are rusted shut?

Thank you. I've tried putting one pair of shakers in boiling hot water. That was to clean off some of the tarnish with baking soda - different story and different thread - but I think that actually loosened the top from one of the shakers. The other one I still cannot get open. So maybe I'll keep tr...

Re: Stacking sterling silver

Thank you for the replies. Just to clarify, I'm most likely never selling this silver; maybe I'll pass them down to my kids one day. They're still little, but let's just hope they won't end up selling it for some quick cash! In reality, this all started when my wife wanted me to put away some hard c...

Stacking sterling silver

I've been stacking sterling silver since July of 2021. I know most stackers stack .999 silver rounds, bars, or even constitutional silver (in the US). But the premiums over spot on those items are through the roof right now, and probably won't be coming down anytime soon. So I made a decision at the...

Does this Greek 925 piece look real?

I'm thinking of buying this Greek tray that's marked "Nissiotis 925." Given my previous run-in with fake Greek silver, I wanted to get the expert opinions again in regards to this piece. Does 925 here still denote that it's solid sterling, or could it also mean that it's silver plated/fill...

Re: Are these shakers real sterling?

Hi, I understood the sulfide is transferred to the aluminium foil and the silver stays on the object. Indeed the silver shine could become a bit dull. I have done it once on a little silver box, with a thick black tarnish of silver sulfide. That's what I understood to be the case, as well. I believ...

How to open shakers that are rusted shut?

I have multiple sterling shakers that are rusted shut, apparently due to being packed away in storage for so long by the previous owner(s). I also want to be careful, so as not to damage them. I've applied as much force as I dared, but they haven't budged. Is there an effective and safe way to tackl...

Re: Are these shakers real sterling?

Such a method will produce long-term damage to your silverware as it is removing a small layer of silver, in different depths, every time you do it and you will be left with an 'orange-peel' effect on the surface. Trev. Thanks. I guess I could use proper silver polish. But is there a difference bet...

Re: Are these shakers real sterling?

Hello In my opinion your middle shaker has been polished aggressively with an abrasive tool, such as a scrubby sponge, a brush, or steel wool, creating unsightly scratches on the surface. It appears that the shaker also has been dipped in a tarnish-removing liquid, which has left a “skinned” and cl...

Re: Are these shakers real sterling?

Hi, I think shakers were not kept under the same conditions;air-borne sulfurs and chlorides cause a yellowish cast on the sterling silver. Zinc in the alloy can turn to stable salts when exposed to air, but all zinc salts are white. If I undesrtood well, all three shakers are marked sterling; show ...

Are these shakers real sterling?

I purchased these shakers online a little while ago. They have a slightly yellowish tinge that I haven't seen in my other sterling pieces. Also, there appears to be some reddish-brown tarnishing on the inside of one of the shakers. They're both stamped sterling on the bottom, but no maker's name/mar...

Re: Peculiar markings on 925 icon

It is not silverplate, It is an embossed sheet of real sterling silver. Usually, to give them rigidity they are reinforced with resin. Sometimes they are silver foil coupled with aluminum foil. OK, so it's basically the equivalent of weighted silver in the US, if that? Well, this is disappointing. ...

Re: Is this solid S950 silver?

Thank you for the replies. Given the high risk, I will hold off on buying this item, even though there might be a chance that it might be solid silver. The wording is very misleading on the supposed certificate of authenticity, if it's indeed silver-plated. Good thing I asked in this forum first.

Re: Peculiar markings on 925 icon

As can be read in the "Garanzia" https://i.postimg.cc/vxZwXF14/Cattura.jpg Si certifica che il presente oggetto è realizzato in lastra d'argento....... We certify that this object is made of silver sheet ....... From my experience I warn you that it is a thin sheet. But if you can't resis...

Is this solid S950 silver?

Here's another icon I'm interested in purchasing. I believe it is of Greek provenance. It is stamped "Silver 950" on the front and comes with a certificate of authenticity attesting to that (see image). Also, the icon itself seems to have good thickness, as can be seen in the 3rd image. I ...

Re: Peculiar markings on 925 icon

I advise you to resist "the impulse of just taking the icon out of the frame". It is a very thin silver foil. By separating it you will damage it irreparably. Best Amena Sorry, I neglected to post an image from the side, which shows that it's not actually a foil, but rather a slab of silv...

Re: Peculiar markings on 925 icon

Collezione means collection in Italian, not a personal name; meaning Guerrini collection, commercial term used to describe e.g. a particular fashion seasonal collection. There is full address in your certificate. Oops, LOL! Thank you for the clarification. I made a similar mistake in another thread...

Re: Peculiar markings on 925 icon

Thank you for the reply. In my research since my original post, I also found the following accompanying certificate to a similar piece. It refers to a gentleman by the name of Collezione Guerrini. Perhaps Collezione and Pietro are from the same family? The certificate also refers to a slab made of 9...
