looks to be a long cross sort of shape. other mark cannot make it out.

Supposed to be gold fitting, strange small box?

Hello Members Have come across this interesting tortoiseshell box that is very small, has 2 corners missing ,said to have tested as 21ct gold by owner, has unusual catch and hinges (not sure if original) Any feelings of origin or age? Not sure what it was used for ,may be snuff, looks early ,not sure,...

Re: Enameled flask ,country? age/

Hi AG Thanks for you comments. No problem, I am sorry I probably should not have posted the flask. Here in Australia ,the most locked down country in the world ,life is getting a bit boring trying to occupy our lives. Has you probably know the flask is not my most valuable item in my collection ,jus...

Re: Enameled flask ,country? age/

Hi Ag Many thanks for your comments, you are entitled to your opinion re unmarked metal, not sure if you are putting unmarked silver in that category, the value difference in the same item, brass ,silver is so negligible ,It seems you are not interested in the artistic value. I am sure you will find m...

Re:Strange comment on maker's marks, by Waltraud Neuwirth.

Hello If I make another point, "A makers mark is no indication that the object was in fact PRODUCED by the maker in question" This to me reads a Faberge hallmarked piece, may have been made by Fred Smith, if made by Fred Smith why would he not mark it Fred Smith ? To me this above comment ...

Re: Strange comment on maker's marks, by Waltraud Neuwirth.

Hello Many thanks for all the comments ," We do not know who or how many people were involved in the manufacture of the Hallmarked item" I do understand all the replies . As we always seem to focus so much on the maker (as if he was the only one that worked on the piece) it would probably ...

Strange comment on maker's marks, by Waltraud Neuwirth.

Hello I have just read this comment by Waltraud Neuwirth ( a very respected author on Viennese silver marks) In the book Wiener Silber 1780-1866 vol 1. If her comment is correct, what does this mean ,when we are reading makers hallmarks ?according to her we do not really know who made the item.(or t...

Re: £160,000 colonial spoon

Re: 917 Silver Filigree Gondola

Hi Mark Anthony.
I feel AG is correct about his comments, if I may add my opinion ,this to me does not look like proper filigree work (fine silver wire work)
this piece to me looks to be a cast piece ,made probably from an original Filigree item used as a pattern.

Regards Guido.

Hello AG Many thanks for your comments ,makes sense to have flat base ,when punching marks(always reason ,why things are done or not done, just have to be worked out) I was under bidder at auction (problem with internet connection) a silver dealer friend tracked the buyer, and I have been able to get ...

George 111 duty mark?

Hi members I would be interested in your thoughts on this George 111 duty mark is it right?, my feeling is that ,there is something not right about it. I may be wrong. I have left the makers mark out on purpose. Is it unusual that only the lid of the box is marked and no marks on base. Regards Guido...
