Re: Crest on a pair of William and Mary tazze

Hi Trevor, Yes I agree this needs further research and I look forward to seeing your updates. One thing to note is the right to display coats of arms extends to many of the landed gentry who may not be as well documented throughout history. Wikipedia- Landed Gentry The term gentry, some of whom were...

Re: Helping With PLAT hallmark

Again, it seems alloys with 10% iridium and 90% platinum are still in use today and will not narrow down the date of manufacture. The item's stylistic features and manufacturer's marks will likely provide the best clues as to when/who/where the items were made, but you will need to add the embedded ...

Re: Helping With PLAT hallmark

Can you explain why you suspect the ring is pre-80's due to the "PLAT" marking? A quick search reveals that "PLAT" is still a valid mark in the US and it is still used today. Legally it can only be used to mark platinum pieces of at least 95% purity or greater. From personal expe...

Re: Crest on a pair of William and Mary tazze

It seems that the Cooper family arms may have been a red herring. There is another solution with the nearly identical Lambert arms that complies with English heraldic rules. Elizabeth Lambert was the only recorded child of Edward Lambert breaking the Lambert male line of descent. This would have ent...

Re: Crest on a pair of William and Mary tazze

Looking a little further in the genealogy tree, it appears John Grove married his not-so-distant relation Eleanor Hanham. While the resulting arms would have negated the need for Thomas Grove to have inherited a combined Grove/Cooper arms, the dexter and sinister sides of the shield would have been ...

Re: Crest on a pair of William and Mary tazze

I used the preview button and still managed to up mix my lefts and rights. Correction: The dexter (left - male) The sinister (right - female) Clarification: "The engraved arms on your tazze could be from the union of Thomas Grove and Elizabeth Hooke in 1686." this is assuming these tazze w...

Re: Crest on a pair of William and Mary tazze

I'm fairly new to coats of arms research but I started an attempt at identifying this coat of arms using a piece-meal approach. The dexter (right - male) side of the shield looks to be a union of the Grove and Cooper arms The sinister (left - female) side of the shield looks to be the Hooke arms The...

Re: Crest on William and Mary two handled cup

Nice piece! Looks like this cup was sold at auction earlier this year alongside the two William and Mary Tazze you posted about subsequently (also very nice). In case you hadn't come across it, the auction's catalogue note for this lot says: "The arms on the cup are those of Coleman of Langley,...

wcthomas, don't worry, there are several of us that have had our comments edited by now ;) You will need to research and form your own opinion of an item's value. I would suggest you can start by looking for the same or similar items that have sold at auction or on sites such as eBay. "SOLD&quo...

Re: Queen Anne Dinner Plate w/ Coat of Arms

A bit further research and I think the engraving is actually of the Scarlett family's coat of arms which appears to be without a castle. Addressing the similarity between Scarlett family and the Baron of Abinger coats of arms: Since James Scarlett was the 1st Baron of Abinger, I am assuming that he ...

Re: French base for spices with bigorne

Interesting it was marked 1st standard (950/1000) when it was made 1817-1834 (DG's working period https://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=56399) and then later remarked 2nd standard (800/1000) during/post 1838.

Re: Queen Anne Dinner Plate w/ Coat of Arms

Hi Trev, Great to hear, thanks for the confirmation! For anyone who might be unfamiliar with the additional markings I will add that it is marked No. 6 which denotes that it was plate number 6 from a larger set of dinner plates, and that it is also marked with a scratch weight of 17"0 (17 troy ...

Queen Anne Dinner Plate w/ Coat of Arms

Hi Forum, I purchased this Britannia standard Queen Anne dinner plate made by John Bache (currently still in transit). It was described as being assayed 1705, London, with a coat of arms added in the second half of 18th century but I'm not sure this is entirely correct. ⋅ The date letter i...

Re: Trying to identify a mark

Hello and welcome to the forum. The upper set of characters "純銀" translates to "pure silver". Although no purity is given, items with this mark are often 0.800 to 0.925 fine silver or greater. I cannot read the other sets of marks, but one set is likely to be the name of the silv...

Thank you as always for the wealth of knowledge. I searched Bohemian Biedermeier beaker and it certainly does resemble one.
Best to let this one pass.

Russian Vase with Dubious Marks

Hi Forum, I came across this piece with markings that look Russian but seem of dubious origin based on what I have read from previous posts in this forum. There appears to be only one "Russian" mark that is similar to Moscow 1788, but the other marks such as maker or assayer mark seem to b...

Hello and welcome to the forum. On the lefthand set of markings I can only make out the second characters "銀", which translates to "silver". I cannot read the righthand set of markings, but they are likely to be the name of the silversmith. Please try to add a clearer image of th...

Re: Chinese/Thai Ice Bucket Failed Authentication Tests

Ag999, you've made my day! I spent so much time studying these characters while trying to type them out using a virtual Thai keyboard I found online but I was never really sure if it was close to being correct. After returning the bucket I stopped pursuing the translation and thought I would never r...

Re: Chinese/Thai Ice Bucket Failed Authentication Tests

Hi AG999, That is really interesting! I did not know that Thai pieces can be assembled using varying grades of silver and even other materials and I would hate to think that I returned this if it was silver! I know many people are hesitant to click on external links, but if you view the YouTube vide...
