Re: Can anyone help with this crest?

If hatching is applied properly [see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatching_(heraldry)] I would say that the field on the husband's coat of arms is azure (blue) as there seem to be horizontal lines. The fess and lions could be argent (silver) because there's no hatching. On the other hand the cross...

Re: Spoon, "GN", 1664

Based on the owners' initials it could be Scandinavian. The initials/names seem to include patronymics which were typical in Scandinavia. For example it could be something like Valdemar PettersSon Lund and Maria DanielsDotter in Swedish.

Re: St. Vladimir pendant (M. Perkhin)

It's not Order of St. Vladimir but just a pendant shaped like an icon with a picture of St. Vladimir (or some other saint). But in any case it definitely doesn't look convincing.

Re: Help needed with spoon id.

I think the maker's mark is IB (or JB) but i couldn't find a match with any British silversmith's mark and it's also lacking the assay marks and the orientation of the maker's mark is also different than typically. I also tried to look around American coin silver hallmarks but couldn't find a match ...

Re: Date letter Poss a "d" (would that tally up)

Hello. It's Sheffield 1896. You need to use Sheffield date letter chart and not London: https://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Dates/Sheffield/Date%20Letters%20D.html The maker's mark is correct. https://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Makers/Sheffield-JA-JD.html#JD As a general tip you should always look ...

If the Bateman mark is upside down then the top letter on the left (in the picture as it is shown) could be partially visible B and the bottom right letter partially visible P so it would match with PB over AB.

Re: Mark identification

Looks like Hanau pseudo hallmarks used by Wolf & Knell: https://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_hanau_marks_01.html
Date is thus late 19th or early 20th century and the style is someting like neo-rococo.

Re: Cannot identify the silver hallmarks

To me the crowned leopard's head looks just like it should after years of polishing. The other hallmarks seem to be deeper so they are not that much affected by polishing. I have a salt where all hallmarks are worn by polishing so that only their outlines can be recognized.

Re: Cannot identify the silver hallmarks

The marker's mar SW is listed unidentified here: https://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Makers/London-SS-SZ.html#SW The date letter could be "h" for 1743 which would be appropriate for the maker. Spoons were hallmarked on the stem at that time so the hallmarks are often "squeezed" a...

Re: Any ideas on this spoon?

Crowned C was used in town mark for Karlstad in Sweden but then you would need to find three crown's mark, date mark (letter + number, like A4) and also a maker's mark (usually initials, like ALS). I can't really see what the small marks are and the one on the left is hidden by the photobucket banne...

Re: Help please re: key for Biedermeier Austrian sugar box?

I believe a professional locksmith can make a key for the lock, i.e. not just a copy of an existing key (which you don't have) but a new key made according to the lock. At least this kind of answer was found in some Finnish locksmith's FAQ.

Re: Any thoughts on this Spoon?

My guess would be that it's Scandinavian. That kind of fiddle pattern was used also in Finland in the mid 18th century although I don't think it's Finnish or Swedish. It could be provincial Norwegian or Danish (or maybe from northern Germany) because it has just maker's mark and not any assay marks.

Re: 13th Artel Letter holder

Regarding the names and the Grand Duke "connection" you should notice that in the name of the person mentioned in the letter - Aleksey Danilovich Kirillov - Aleksey is his first name, Danilovich is the patronym (i.e. his father's first name was Danil so it means "son of Danil") a...

I searched for other icons of the same subject to find more information regarding "vedenia" and I found one where it was spelled differently. It seems to be виде́ние (videnie) - vision, sight, apparition, phantom - which would make perfect sense as it's the name of the icon Apparitions of ...

Re: Russian Icon, help with marks and name of the saints

My knowledge of Russian is very limited but an online dictionary gives a word ве́дение (vedenie) which means authority, conducting. Another possibility could be that the second to last letter isn't "i" (especially when compared to "i" in "sergia") but ж (zh) although I ...

Re: Help me to identify this spoons

The spoon is Danish and from Aarhus (spelled Aarhuus in the spoon and sometimes also Århus). I'm not an expert on Danish silver but based on a quick search I would say it's by Carl Christian Hansen (f. ca. 1785 - d. 1847, borgerskab 1812).

If the tongs are by James McEwan his working dates are given c1762-c1790 here: https://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Makers/Glasgow-GJ.html#J Sugar tongs of that type were made from the 1770s onwards so the style is appropriate for the active years of James McEwan. Re: Snuff box or bon bon box, London

I'm glad to hear that you aren't too disappointed. Historicist or revival style items from 19th century can sometimes be quite tricky as it's not so easy to distinguish them from the items they try to imitate. And it gets more complicated when the pseudo hallmarks try to imitate the real ones. But t...
