numbers 1 and 2 did mean anything, often are put on the pieces to recognize pieces to put together (IE cap and body) you can easyly find this on tea pots, coffee pots cigarettes silver compact powders box...all made in two pieces, or you can find additionally on sets (as tea sets) for the same reaso...

Hi, for sure is typical italian silver jewellery box! regarding the mark, it is belonging to the period 1872-1934 , but I can say that style is typical of the first half XX century so the correct timing of the piece is 1900-1934.
