Silverplate?

Sorry, I can't help you re the maker's mark. However, re the question of solid silver vs. silverplate, the outer tines are quite worn, and so with a close look, it should be apparent whether the fork is plated or not (if so, there will be a distinct line visible between the silver plating and core m...

American Pseudo-Hallmarks

"Now my question is about the marks. Are these so called pseudo marks or do they indicate something else ?" Yes, they appear to be American pseudo-hallmarks. I've taken the liberty of copying the responses to a similar inquiry a few years ago, FWIW. From Trev (dognose): Pseudo marks are d...

Thx!

Thank you, silverly! So this appears to be a retailer's mark as opposed to a maker's mark. And now, New Orleans or New York? Well, since I'm the potential seller, obviously it's New Orleans. Ha! Thank you again for the enlightenment!

I fear that you may have taken my response as critical in nature, which I did not intend, silverly, alas, yet another poor attempt at humor gone astray. I have personally had a very old, apparently dead thread of mine come back to life with requested info, though in this case my response was not in ...

FWIW for this zombie thread, I have a serving spoon also marked M.M.FREDRICK and VIRG. NEV. COIN. It is not maker marked, but it is in the Eureka pattern by Schultz and Fischer of San Francisco, similar to the Gothic pattern by SF makers Vanderslice, Reichel, and Koehler&Ritter (both patterns a ...

Crest on Hannay of Paisley Ladle

Thank you, kerangoumar. Orkney is way up north, so it must be a toddy ladle! One might think Mr. Moodie would have bought from Aberdeen or Dundee, a lot closer than Paisley. Anyway, appreciate your enlightenment!

Bump!

I thought I might bump this one back up to the top, noting that in another thread this strange form of ampersand was has been attributed to Scottish makers (but the spoon in question in that discussion turned out to be Indian colonial). Still, in this case, it seems to me that the incised sharp drop...

From a set of five small (4 1/2 in.), somewhat crudely made from hand-formed sheet, likely American, Old English Pattern teaspoons, unknown maker (no marks): http://www359.pair.com/russpac/ucoincoff3.JPG A reverse image of this pattern appears on a spoon identified as by Caleb Beal of Massachusetts ...

Hi, all, checking back in after having been away for a time, and see this old thread of mine has been brought back from the dead (how appropriate to discover this on Halloween!). During a clean-up some time ago, I eliminated some of the original pics posted here, which I have just restored. Thanks t...

Hi, all. I just happened on this thread, interested as I have a c.1820 WHT sauce ladle. This thread inspired me to do a Google search again (after a few years) on WHT, this is the result (much more than the last one): http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aoffici...

Thanks, buff, for your response. I think you may be correct to some extent, but not to the degree of the discrepancy of wear/abuse I see between the bowl interiors and the remainder of the ladles. Yes, in the mixed flatware drawer, there are likely collisions between knife points and ladle bowls. Bu...

Thank you, Trev, for your response. I wonder whether this industrial age forced transition of provincial silversmith/part-time retailer to retailer/part-time silversmith is covered in a text (that I can afford?). I believe there is a fairly recent book out on Scot provincial silversmiths, but I can'...

I'm happy to see that this ladle bowl abuse malady, whatever it is, is confined to the Colonies, figures. ;o) Looking closely (a lifetime of significant myopia, nearly seven spheres worth, has one upside, I can focus clearly at about four inches) convinces me that these marks were mostly made by a k...

Below is a pic (scan, sorry for the poor quality) of part of the bowl interior of the soup ladle made or retailed by Welsh & Bro. of Baltimore, MD, around 1880 (Japanese aesthetic hand engraving, popular "Lily of the Valley" theme) to 1898 (Rainwater notation): http://img.photobucket.c...
