Re: Brit Sterling? American Coin? Continental? Star Maker Mark

Bump back to the top! Thought I'd try again, now with a new image host. Same questions as before, here are the pics in case the old links don't work for you (I can see them, but evidently many others can't). https://i.imgur.com/nEqMSEL.png https://i.imgur.com/QK6zWAO.png C.1805 American? Re: Bear Claw On Soup Ladle

I tried a hacker work around that allows me to see my "locked up" PB pics, but evidently not everyone else can. So here's the crest in question, posted on a new host: https://i.imgur.com/B3w2NEZ.jpg So once more, might anyone be able to identify the source for this crest? TIA!

Re: San Jose Silver Spoon

Rather than try to dig my odd pieces of SF silver out of the dungeon to try to identify the maker of the J.LEWIS. (and LAWLER & CO) marked spoon(s), I surfed the 'net to hopefully find a greater number of representative examples. One good find was a closed auction by Witherell's of the estate of...

Re: San Jose Silver Spoon

Thanks again, guys. Added below is a composite pic of the spoon, received today. Length is 17.7 cm and weight 34 grams. Unfortunately not much more to go on to determine whether the spoon was made by Lewis or by Schulz & Fischer and only retailed by him. https://i.imgur.com/Oa52waF.jpg

Re: San Jose Silver Spoon

Thank you, Trev, for your follow up! You and silverly and a few others are amazing in the obscure, detailed info you are able to scare up. I'm stoked that this spoon, currently in transit, was associated with such an early California silver maker/vendor. Can't wait to get it in hand to determine, if...

Re: San Jose Silver Spoon

Thank you, silverly, for your informative response. I mentioned the idea of easterner Lewis retiring in San Jose as a kind of a joke, I'm amazed that it was close to the mark. A 1849 date for arrival seems rather early (a true "49er"?), though, would be nice to get confirmation of this. As...

Re: San Jose Silver Spoon

Following a different thread, I just now became aware again of another site that happens to feature a J.LEWIS., however the stamp is different (embossed vs. incised?) and the maker is listed for 1830-64 in Philadelphia. Maybe he retired in San Jose? ;o) Link below: http://sterlingflatwarefashions.co...

San Jose Silver Spoon

Hi! Been a while since I last checked in, need to review what I've missed! In the meantime, I have a question re a piece I just picked up. I have a weakness for pre-earthquake San Francisco area silver and so took a small chance on a tablespoon marked J.LEWIS. (maybe the retailer? - unfound in Ensko...

Re: Bear Claw On Soup Ladle

No takers? My inexpert, scattershot ether sleuthing has so far identified only the following: Tho. Powys, Lilford Hall (lions gamb erect and erased holding a sceptre): http://www.lilfordhall.com/PowysFamily/Thomas-Powys.asp Overbury? http://www.myfamilysilver.com/pages/crestfinder-crest.aspx?id=1787...

Bear Claw On Soup Ladle

I'd like to ask whether someone with the knowledge or a good book on family crests might provide some info on the item below: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/nihontochicken/LadleTD3_zpszfs4bfb8.jpg This crest appears on the finial of a twelve plus inch sterling soup ladle made by Thomas Dicks...

Re: Tho. Dicks Soup Ladle

Looks like Grimwade starts at $200-300 depending on edition and condition, so I guess I'll have to rely on whatever freebie references. Thanks to all above for your enlightenment!

Tho. Dicks Soup Ladle

Hi, all! Been away for a while, lurking a bit lately. Thought I'd drop a line on a recent acquisition. I vaguely remember reading an article many years ago that indicated that the price of old sterling silver flatware (say in the 18th century) was perhaps two thirds in the price of silver and one thi...

Re: W<pellet>J Mark?

Thanks for the makers' marks link. I think I had this bookmarked once, but it fell to the wayside, need to add it back to the repertoire. I see that also inserts Flash Plugin ads, will have to see if it's as burdensome as Photobucket. Thanks again!

W<pellet>J Mark?

I recently obtained a pair of sauce ladles stamped for 1830-31 London and a maker's mark as below: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/nihontochicken/WJohnson2_zpsi3r2lrmu.jpg The seller identified this as a William Johnson issue. However, I cannot find this mark or the name in my standard refere...

Re: ELKINGTON MARK

It does impress me as early Elkington silverplate, but unfortunately I can't say what the individual marks mean. FWIW, link below to my piece of early Elkington silverplate that was sold on by Cameron of Dundee.

Re: JWD or TWD Spoon

Thank you, wev, for your update. Unfortunately, my web search did not turn up any maker's mark for John Wheelwright Davis by himself. Perhaps my mark is all that's available? As deeply struck as it is, it is very well rubbed, and what you see is what you get, i.e., I don't think I can take a better ...

Re: Corn Plant Decorated Tongs RW

Robert Wilson, New York, 1805? Of his three marks in Ensko IV, the one on the rectangular field is in the ballpark, the R is okay, the W not so much.
