Re: Shell Bowl Onslow Soup Ladle

Thanks for the clarification. Though a remake and not a period piece, it has a certain charm for me, one of my favorite ladles. Thanks again, take care.

Shell Bowl Onslow Soup Ladle

Just dropping in for a moment. Have been off in another venue chasing unicorns, but recently came across the item below, a kind of a silver grail of mine for some time. The king of sterling flatware is arguably the large soup or punch ladle, and while I have a few others, I've had a hankering for a ...

Re: Muffineer Maker?

Thank you for the link. It looked vaguely familiar, and a search of my bookmarks identified the web site that I had forgotten. Ding, dong! Thanks for the reminder!

Muffineer Maker?

Just obtained a muffineer with the marks shown below, I believe for London, 1928-29, but my references don't go that late with regards to makers. Might someone identify the silversmith responsible for this item ? TIA!

Re: Argo? Allen? or ???

Thank you for your responses. Whether the maker's mark is actually for Argo or Allen, it appears to me that whoever fashioned the IA punch also made the ABD stamp, observing the similarity of the letters, particularly the general construction of and the serifs on the A marks. Other considerations ar...

Argo? Allen? or ???

I have incoming an early Xmas present, an Old English pattern silver soup ladle that was presented by the seller as circa 1830 by unknown smith LA of Aberdeen. Given the pattern and maker's mark, I believe it's from about fifty years earlier, perhaps by John Argo of nearby Banff in around 1775-80, o...

Re: Hallmark vs. Provincial Town Mark???

I'm sure if you had asked generally about differences in collector interest of items, rather than differences of value, it might have remained intact. Thanks for your input. I had actually considered framing my inquiry in safer, more nebulous terms, but decided that when you get down to it, what in...

I&GH Mark

Cannot identify the maker of this mark on a small fiddle pattern spoon, is reminiscent of some Colonial Indian marks with the anchors. Any ideas?

Re: Hallmark vs. Provincial Town Mark???

Hi, Trev! Yes, I was and am quite aware of the "immediate deletion without notice" statement in the forum rule. Of course, this rule is primarily aimed at those individuals who want a quick specific dollar appraisal in order to flip an item that they have just acquired, their interest mone...

Re: Hallmark vs. Provincial Town Mark???

Thank you for your elucidation. I had interpreted forum rules to imply requests for a dollar value on a specific item were forbidden and not with respect to a generalized relative value of classes of items (no specific dollar values involved). Sorry, I didn't realize that the prohibition was that se...

Hallmark vs. Provincial Town Mark???

Round 2? (I thought I posted this general question a couple of days ago, but it appears to have disappeared into the ether without a bubble.) Scottish provincial town marked pieces are keenly collected by a number of silver devotees. But a few of the small town silversmiths had some of their work ha...

Re: F.R.Reichel Soup Ladle (More Bowl Abuse!)

Re the breaking up of sugar lumps, note that this ladle is about 1860 manufacture (pattern attributed to Vanderslice) or slightly thereafter. I had thought that this was after the introduction of granulated sugar, but it appears that this was the transition time, so you may well be right, Trev, sorr...

Re: F.R.Reichel Soup Ladle (More Bowl Abuse!)

Closer examination indicates that the nicks have shape consistent with impact by a knife point as opposed to, say, an ice pick or awl. Definitely mechanical, not chemical, damage. Now what would people be stabbing with a knife in a ladle bowl, hundreds of times? As mentioned in the referenced thread...

Oops, forgot the measurements: 207 grams, 32.2 cm length, 11.5 cm bowl width.

F.R.Reichel Soup Ladle (More Bowl Abuse!)

I just picked up a nice early San Francisco silver (likely coin) soup ladle made or flogged on by Fredrick Reichel in the beaded pattern (Vanderslice dies?), as retailed by M.M.Baldwin. Here are a few pics: https://i.imgur.com/b7gtZnu.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/CTgMiTh.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/SA1TO...

Re: Bear Claw On Soup Ladle

Just received the Fairbairn's book, at a bit under $4 a pound, quite a bargain, I guess. Haven't as yet gone through it completely for my mystery crest, but I noticed the Eley and Fearn crest noted above on plate 126d, number 2. Similar on plate 126, number 2. Will take some time to go through it ex...

Re: Bear Claw On Soup Ladle

Thanks for the effort. I located a cheap copy of Fairbairn's and so have it on order, should be here by next Wednesday, so I can convince myself in the future. In the meantime, I noticed some Eley and Fearn spoons at auction on Fleabay sporting the crest below: https://i.imgur.com/INHfT5P.jpg?1 Diff...

William Lawler San Francisco Silver Dates?

Indulging myself once again in early California flatware, I recently received nine teaspoons by the San Francisco maker/retailer William Lawler. There are four slightly different types in sets of four, two, two and one, pic of single examples below: https://i.imgur.com/5SIDkDL.jpg Given that the spo...

TH Ladle with Merdog???

Came across this interesting piece, a small ladle with marks as below: https://i.imgur.com/gPrM2pl.jpg A merdog??? A strange one for sure. Given the crest engraving, I figure the piece is most likely Brit, but Thos. Howell of London (Bath), entered 1791, is the only maker's mark that comes close, an...
