Re: Maker GB?

Worth noting that Denière was a prominent bronze manufacturer and supplier of bronze clocks to Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III. See the French Wikipedia page on Guillaume Denière . The article says that there were an important purveyor of silverware, but given the brief duration of the mark, it appe...

Re: Rooster, 85 Paris mark AND crab??

I disagree; I think it is very clearly the provincial crab mark introduced in 1838. (Evidence of bigorne marks on the underside of it would confirm this.) I think there is no real mystery here. When new marks were introduced in 1809, 1819 and 1838, there was a grace period each time when old items w...

I found the actual death record for Fauve, which gave some additional information (translated and paraphrased): Jean Antoine Fauve, silversmith, died 8 Apr 1825, age 81, at his residence at Vaugirard, rue Blomet No. 24, born in Morangis, Seine-et-Oise, son of Antoine Fauve and Louise Rigault, marrie...

Re: Help with makers marks and ownership 1793-94

Christophe-Philippe Vahland was succeeded at 14 quai des Orfèvres in 1837 by François Auguste Grattepain, who registered his mark at that address on 1 Feb 1837. Vahland died on 10 Jan 1852, leaving his estate to Grattepain. Grattepain (born 7 May 1797) cancelled his mark on 30 Jun 1856. I cannot fin...

Lille, 1762-1763, by Claude-François Ricourt, dit François (1710-after 1781), Master 1733 The C’s are the owner’s initials, and I can’t make out the smaller marks. Hope this helps! Ref: Nicole Cartier & Isabelle Cartier-Stone, Orfèvres de Lille, v. I (Paris/Louvain: Peeters, n.d. [2006]), pp. 22...

Re: Lozenge master silver mark on eye bath

I agree emphatically that the mark is Blaquière's. I spot-checked available Paris commercial almanacs, and he is listed in 1825 at 123 rue St. Honoré, and in 1833 at 11 rue Bailleul; he is not listed in 1837 or 1838. (I could not find directories for 1834-1836). He is almost certainly the Pierre-Noë...

Re: French Maker 1819-38 T.B.

You’ll note the small pellet under the “8” in the mark; this indicated the secondary assay office in the Vienne department, which was located in Chatellerault. Tardy lists only the departmental numbers for 1819-1838. It is important to note that the official department numbers changed several times ...

Re: Maker of silver spoons

Although the N/F combination of assayer's letters dates the spoons to ca. 1869/1870 and thus after the death of Adolph Gustav Diederich, the Diederich silverware manufactory at 33 Kaiserstrasse is listed in Berlin directories until 1872, under the direction of Diederich's sons Gustav Conrad Albert D...

Re: help with my poultry dome?

In nearly all of these I have seen, the dome itself is silverplate and only the finial is sterling silver. If the hallmarks appear only on the finial, then that would be the case here.

Also, is there an armorial engraved on the dome? That would identify the correct family.

Great find!

Re: Salt cellar from Galicia

The letter “R” was the code for the Galician assay office in Zaleszczyki (now Zalishchyky, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine). However, the letter at the top of the maker’s mark indicated the city in that assay office jursidiction in which the silversmith was registered. The letter above the maker “WS” in yo...

Re: Help with D7 mark. Possible Austro Hungarian?

D7 was the code for Tarnów, Galicia (now Poland) from 1824 to 1865. I find in Galicia directories of the period a pearl dealer Herz Engel in 1855 and an ironmonger Judah Engel in 1862, but doubt that either of them is a likely candidate.

Re: An Unknown maker

The assay office code – 81 with a pellet – is that of Chatéllerault in the département of Vienne, which was active 1824-1937. The marks here ceased usage in 1838, of course, dating your piece to 1824-1838. The maker’s mark – TP with two pellets - is that of Gabriel Jean Texier-Petit (also Tessier-Pe...

Re: Italian Marks

Very nice! The marks here were used for a very short time – 1793 to 1803 – in the Kingdom of Sardinia. The crowned “VA” ( for King Vittorio Amedeo III) is the large assay mark, and the initials “GV” at the bottom of it are those of the assayer Giuseppe Veroni of Turin. The initials “MP” in the pelle...
