Re: Unknown ABT i Riga 1886

I think I've found him. An 1885 German-language Riga directory available online lists, under gold & silversmiths, one Adam Bartholomäus Taube, working in Riga at 75 Alexanderstrasse. He is not listed in 1898 (the next directory I could find), but a Hugo Taube, also a gold/silversmith, is listed ...

Re: Who is this silversmith?

The crab is not an export mark, but rather the minimum silver fineness guarantee for small items made in the French provinces from 1838 (and in all of France from 1962, when it replaced the Parisian boar's head mark). Your piece looks to be earlier than 1962 though - I'd say 1920s - and therefore th...

Re: Who is the maker of these early 1800 tea spoons?

Arminjon I lists this mark (LAT, with a duck and a ball above) as that of Louis Auguste Taillepied, maker of couverts (forks & spoons), 14 rue des Anglais, registered 1801, with no other information (mark 2223). Oddly, Taillepied is not listed in any of the available Paris Almanacs of the period...

Re: Large Silver Knight - What country?

The mark looks to be the French "weevil" import mark (though upside-down here). That said, 90% of these knight figures I have seen are from Hanau, Germany, and more than half of those by J.D. Schleissner at that.

Re: mark French clock and watch industry

According to period legal documents, the Besançon watchcase marks were created by Directoire Decree #2737 on 3 Vendémiarie an VIII [25 Sep 1799], and were the result of an agreement among France, the national watch industry in Besançon and the newly-acquired Swiss territories. It permitted variant f...

Achilles Tallman, New York City

This robust American Empire Tea Set came across my desk this week. I’d never come across the mark before, though the maker (retailer more likely) is listed in Paul von Khrum’s Silversmiths of New York City 1684-1850 . I did a little digging and was able to flesh out some basic biographical info: Ach...

LAD for Louis-Antoine Drouard, born ca. 1756, Master 10 Jan 1784, died 19 Feb 1811 in Paris, 10th arrondissement. His workshop at 32 rue de Thionville was continued 1811-1817 by his widow, Marie Jeanne Hilaire Picard, presumably with the same mark.

Re: Hermes box with an unknown master

It is important to note that, beginning with the Industrial Revolution, a "maker's" mark is not necessarily that of a trained craftsman, but possibly that of a business owner. Indeed, from the late 19th century the latter is far more likely. Just as an item marked "Tiffany" or &q...

Émile-Maurice Hermès (1875-1951), of course. The device is a stirrup, a nod to the company's origin as saddler and tackmaker.

Re: Antique Russian Cigarette Case

Just an observation that the attached date appears to be a 25th anniversary commemoration: 1882 - 21/V - 1907. (That is, 21 May 1882 - 1907). Logic dictates, then, that it would have been made in 1907 and, if so, then the 1882/98 marks cannot be right; why make a commemorative case 9 to 25 years bef...

Re: Unknown maker

Zilver2 has made a transcription error here; the dates and addresses given are for Louis-Jacques Berger, not Louis Isidore Angée. (They appear on the same page of Arminjon I and the marks look similar – an easy mistake to make!) Angée registered his first mark on 1 Apr 1834 at 11 Place Dauphine; he ...

Re: Sal cellar from Austro-Hungaria

I don’t think the attribution to Carl Gottlob Kunze is correct. My research shows that he was born ca. 1792 (baptized 9 Dec 1792, son of Johann Gottlob Kunze) and would therefore have been barely 15 in 1807. He doesn’t show up in Dresden directories until 1829, and did not marry until 1831. I haven’...
