Hi - that was the reason why I think the match box was not "born" in Russia. This kind of striker surface I never have seen on any kind of Russian match boxes. This is a surface used for the Italian little waxmatches which ignite on every hard surface. Much too delicate for the Russians......
Hi all - visited one of the highlights of the year, Europe's most important antiques fair TEFAF in Maastricht / Holland. Here is partly what I found. Some very strange objects could be seen. Hi - in my collection I have some 50 Russian match safes (vesta boxes) of all styles according to the yearlong development of the matches, the different modes, carrying methods and personal taste. For the sake of completeness I show a "table" model and a typical cigarette case with tinder ...
Hi all - The firm of goldsmiths founded in 1853 by Pavel Akimovich Ovtschinnikov, alongside Fabergé the most important in Russia. The firm received the Imperial Warrant in 1883. Ovtschinnikov was the first business to devote itself entirely to the manufacture of articles in Russian national style. I...
HI AG2012 - a goldsmith whom I showed the piece told me all the soldering was made with tin - lower temperatures - no damage. The gold coins soldered on cigarette cases or other objects are always soldered with tin without damage or discolouring the gilding - the initials were riveted to prevent thi...
Hi Peter - thank you for the complete history of Minsk! I just lit the period from the foundation of the city until the producing of the presented silver. I thought the following decades had no big influence on the upcoming questions. Maybe already Napoleon destroyed all relevant archives - or the G...

Hi - The earliest historical references to Minsk date to the 11th century (1067), when it was noted as a provincial city within the principality of Polotsk. The settlement developed on the rivers. In 1242, Minsk became a part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It received town privileges in 1499. From...
Hi - the maker is Malcz - scroll up - see my first contribution sugar tongs! For a silvercollector Minsk is not very productive - the only interesting silver is from Malcz - and that is from Warsaw...... There were many better-off people in Minsk - where did they bought their cutlery? In Warsaw? We ...
Hi - of course it should read Minsk! Sorry! Perhaps the population background of Minsk plays a critic role. 52% jews, the rest Lithuanians, Belorussians, Russians and Poles - several different denominations. Poles were the minority. All the assay masters were (jews?) Poles. Why no Russians? Nearly a...
Hi - many years ago collectors told me, that silver from Warsaw had to be assayed in Minsk - just one of several chicanes towards Poles. It took some years for Warsaw to get an own townmark,(eagle or Greek letter jota). Different autors write that the Minsk and Warsaw marks were often confused. In m...
